Ugh I feel bad, Indie injured a turtle. :(

Geez this friggin dog and his oral fixation!!!  My son stopped by to chat and the dogs were driving us batty so I put them in the back yard.  A few minutes later there's a loud repetitive thumping on the deck and I think that Indie is playing with an old sneaker he has outside as a toy.  He likes to toss it in the air over and over.  I go to the door to bring him in and he's got a box turtle and he's chewed the edges off its poor shell!!!  I know from my bat experience that game and wildlife is useless, they never returned my calls, so I pop on the Internet and it says the best thing is to release it back where it came from and that they're pretty resilient with shell injuries.  The turtle inside was fine, no injury, it had sealed itself in there pretty tight and luckily, Indie had only gotten the very edge of the shell chewed a bit, but it was bleeding a little.  I didn't know shells could bleed, but it makes sense.  So son and I put it back outside the fence near the culvert that runs behind the house and the little guy skeedaddled away quickly.  I just hate that he injured it!  If only he'd barked at it like Woobie usually does, I'd have come out because I hate barking dogs annoying the neighbors and would have seen it earlier.  I feel bad for the little thing.  I had a pet turtle as a kid and I was heartbroken when it died.  Stupid chewing machine dog.

Aw, poor thing.  At least you cared enough to do some research.  And at least he only chewed the shell.  My dogs would have probably thought,"Self propelled Kong!"

I hope he's ok, I'm sure he will be.

Oh Indie!  But it sounds like it will be fine, I've some turtles with some banged up shells so a bit off the edges shouldn't be too big a deal.

I love turtles too and had a pet turtle called Herbie!  In fact my sister still has him Big Smile

And I know your frustration as the big PIA is constantlyin trouble these days Angry

Poor Indie!  He was just having fun.

When I was little, the dog we had at that time grab my two turtles and made the same. We took the turtles to the vet and he cleaned their shells, put some medication on the injuries and he said to my that to put liquid silicone over the holes to help them heal. Both of them had those silicone patches for a few months and they fell by themselves. Their shells healed pretty good and the dog never messed again with them.

Turtles are my favorite animals... don't let Thor and the cats to know! Wink

"Self Propelled Kong"  ROFLMAO!!!  That's too funny!

Yes Karen, my PIA has a rash that I gotta get checked today, I just spent a ton on his HW test and titers, last thing I need is some weird disease from eating turtle shell!  It's always something!  Good thing we love 'em huh?

The spate of cool weather has mine going bonkers and wearing them out or entertaining their brains doesn't seem to address the energizer bunnies!  Anybody else got dogs with Fall Fever?

Poor turtle... But I know he will be OK!

Totti once grabbed my turtle from the aquarium and played with him. When I took Phillip (the turtle) away from him, he was injured and bleeding, but he is fine now.

Oh, poor little turtle! At least you were able to get it away before more damage was done. Hopefully the little guy will be alright.

Big drag, I know, but I'd bet the turtle will at least live to enjoy turtle life a bit longer...  If only squirrels had shells...

Yep, turtles are one of Buddy's favorites.  Its funny, though...because he just walks around with it.  He doesn't try to chew on it or toss it...just walks around with it.  Silly dog.

I've taken many a turtle out of his big soft mouth and placed them outside the fenced area.  Or, he'll come across one while on a walk.  There's a safe part on our walk where I let him loose to get some good sniffs in.  A few times we had to have a brief "discussion" so that I could put the turtle back where he picked it up from.

On another note...I can't tell you how many times I'll be driving down the road and see a turtle in the road (or about to enter the road).  I always stop (if safe) and get out and put the turtle as far off the road as possible. Smile

At least your dogs only injure the poor thing! Frankie is a little monster with small animals, he has killed two turtles, one adult raccoon, a fat squirell, and countless small birds. *sigh*

Can I borrow him?  With the number the raccoons have been doing on my trash cans lately, I can't say I'd shed a tear if the dogs killed one of those.  Though I wouldn't want to watch.

Sure he would be happy to lend a paw with that. :P This last racoon took a chunk out of his left ear, tho. Nasty buggers, I am glad I didnt have watch that fight.
