    PRETTY GREEN CAST

I WENT TO THE ORTHOPEDIST TODAY AND HE SAID HE HAD GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS.  THE GOOD NEWS IS HE THINKS MY THUMB WILL HEAL WITHOUT SURGERY AS THINGDS ARE LINED UP CORRECT.  THE BAD NEWS IS I HAVE TO WEAR  A FULL CAST FOR 4 WEEKS AS MOMEMENT OF MY THUMB COULD "UNLINE" THINGS.ALSO IF THERE IS SOME LIGAMENT TEAR, IT SHOULD HEAL WITH THE CAST ON.

I WENT FROM A "SPRAINED THUMB" AND WEARING THAT LITTLE METAL SPLINT TO HAVIVG A BROKEN THUMB AND WEARING  A "HALF CAST SPLINT HELD ON WITH ACE BANDAGE ( IT WAS ONLY ON THE INSIDE OF MY ARM AND THUMB) TO WEARING A FULL BRIGHT GREEN CAST THAT COVERS MY THUMB AND  HAND TO MY FINGERS AND COMES UP MY ARM ALMOST TO MY ELBOW.  I GO BACK IN 4 WEEKS OCT. 17, AND HE WILL REMOVE THE CAST AND X=RAY TO MAKE SURE IT IS HEALED,

BY THE WAY, THE BREAK IS RIGHT WHERE MY THUMB IS "HOOKED" ONTO MY HAND.  I CAN'T USE LEFT HAND AT ALL FOR TYPING OR MUCH ELSE FOR MTHAT MATTER-----CAST IS TO BIG AND IN THE WAY,  SO I WON'T BE DOING MUCH TYPING FOR TRHE NEXT FEW WEEKS, BUT WILL READ AND TYPE WHEN I CAN.

I'm pretty well ambidextrous -- I was one of those people who should have been left handed but my mother wouldn't hear of it.

So it was a good thing eventually -- about 10 years ago I had to have a carpal tunnel release done on both wrists.  It had gotten pretty bad and pretty painful ... so I thot since I had to have both wrists done I'd have the right one done FIRST because I'm essentially right handed.  So I figured I could get the worst over first.

Well, there are just things I'm "right handed" about that I frankly never KNEW I was right-handed!  *sigh* so I had to figure out how to do those LEFT handed.

But the biggest surprise of my life the night after surgery on the LEFT hand (and I figured this would be the 'easy' hand).

I went to brush my teeth and darned near put my own eye out!!

WHO KNEW??? Who knew I was a lefty when it came to brushing my teeth?

Apparently!!  After I wiped the toothpaste out of my eye I just stood there and laughed at myself and I thot whoa -- of all the things I never expected ... brushing my teeth was not something I thot would be difficult *other-handed*.

So ... my point, Sandra - I understand.  People will say "But you still have your other hand!!"  But dang it -- it just isn't the same.  Even sleeping at night -- I'll bet you've had to change how you sleep, or how you get in and out of bed because of losing the use of that hand??

Take care hon -- and holler if you need to vent!!   *gentle hugs*  Callie

I know what you mean since I just recently got the splint off of my broken finger. There are some things you do without thinking until you can't use that hand so much, anymore. But I survived.
