    Car Harness Suggestions

    Hi everyone,

Some of you may have read in the NDR section a week ago that I didn't pass my driving test. Well I took it again yesterday and passed with flying colors (and my instructor was different and LOADS nicer) So yay I have my license! lol. But before I take Riley to the park I need to buy a car harness. I would prefer something that can be found at a petstore (PetsMart, PetPeople, PetCo, are all closeby) because I would really like to see it close up before buying it. I cannot drive with Riley loose for his safety and because he always wants to climb up front and move around - not safe at all for a new driver. So I just need a trusty, safe car harness for an approx. 70lb dog (who is very deep chested, if that makes a difference). Alright, that's it. Thanks a lot! : )

I always wanted to get my dogs one of these

but they ended up getting  another kind.  Basically any type of secure harness and a modified leash is better than nothing.  But I like the ones that are made specifically for car use becuase they usually have  wider straps and or padding on the front.

So far, the only two I've heard recommended over and over (for quality and safety) are the Ruffrider and the Champion K9.

    Hi

I have a Four Paws Car Harness http://www.fourpaws.com/products/dogs/travel-related-products/car-safety-belts/safety-seat-support-harness.php

made by http://www.fourpaws.com/  I feel this is one of the best Car Safety Harnesses I have seen. I have one for Tisha & Dijon they weigh about 65 lbs each and wear a size Large.

Cherokee and Jaz both have Ruffrider Roadie Basics. They stopped making the Basic, but I think you can still find them online. Cherokee's 65 pounds and Jaz is 75, and they both wear a size 6, if that's helpful.

It's true that anything is better than nothing, but only a few harnesses are actually crash tested. If you're just looking for something to keep him in place in normal driving, go to Petsmart or Petco. But if you want something to protect him in an accident, you'll probably have to order it.

I like the Safe Traveler Harness. It is flexible so it would allow Riley to sit or lie down. The only color it comes in though is black. Here is some reviews of the product.

     Pros: Easy to attach, durable

    Cons: Poor fit, loud snap

    Best Use: Larger Dogs

"We bought this harness for our 4-month old boxer pup. Although we could get the straps to fit, the device is too bulky for her. We expect she'll grow into it, so this isn't a flaw; just a warning to puppy owners.

The buckle snaps feel very secure but make a VERY loud noise when attached. Our puppy was already tentative about these big straps beng wrapped about her, and then the loud noise freaked her out." Qoute from user

Pros: durable, good length, easy to attach

    Cons: tether twists badly, uncomfortable

    Best Use: Smaller Dogs

"I bought this product because my hyperactive dog needs restraining in the car when I'm driving. He jumps back and forth in the back seat so much that the tether twists itself up and limits his movement, so I have to keep stopping the car and getting in the back seat to untwist it. The tether could be improved by means of a swivel on the seatbelt end to prevent this twisting up." Qoute from user
