Inflatable Kayaks

    Inflatable Kayaks

Anyone have any experience with these? We're thinking about buying one just to use at the lake here or to take camping and it'd be a lot easier to take with us than a rigid type. I just wonder how well they do and how durable they are.

I can't help you with inflatable but my MIL had a collapse-able one. It folded up into about the size of a back pack. They used that one a lot.  I am not a kayaker, my DH has one. I rarely get in. Tipping over in a boat is not my idea of fun. He says they are stable, but I remind him of my coordination and I am a "if it can go wrong it will" magnet. Big Smile

Yesterday, at the lake, I saw someone kayaking with their rather large dog sitting in front of them.  Talk about a stable kayak!!!

Do you usually go kayaking at the same place?  If so I would look into the canoe/kayak stands that most parks rent out by the season.  I think an inflatible kayak would be fun but not very kayak like.

No experience with an inflatable kayak here.  I would be kinda nervous about hitting something underwater, & deflating it in the middle of the lake.

An inflatable would make me nervous. If you go with one let us know how it works out!

Well, being the impulsive type, DH already ordered it, so hopefully we'll love it. Reviews on it were very good and the bottom has a skid plate that is supposed to prevents punctures. It's a 2 person kayak and we mainly just want something to take out to the lake and cruise around in on weekends or if we go to Tahoe or camping. I asked a friend who does a lot of kayaking and she said she knows someone who has one and loves it. Apparently they're not as fast or easy to turn as the rigid type, but for puttering on the lake, it should be fine.

DH has plans to teach Sassy to ride in it with him, so I'll be sure to post pictures if that ever happens Big Smile

That looks really nice, Cathy.  You have to update us on how it works.  We have two rigid kayaks, that I hate to have to haul them for just a short weekend trip.  If an inflatable works well, I'd be interested in buying one.
