    Nursing Moms...question

My daughter has a 10 week old who won't take a bottle, and she has to go back to work after Labor Day (teacher).  Anyone have this problem?  I know she has researched it online and talked to the doc, but I thought I would ask anyway.  Right now she left a hungry baby with a neighbor for a few hours...and is sitting there worrying.

Has she tried different nipples? I know with Samantha she wouldnt take but one certain nipple.

Try the La Leche League.   http://www.llli.org/WebUS.html

They support feeding breast milk, but they aren't particular about whether or not it is fed directly from the breast or from a bottle.

Here are some of their ideas on how to get a baby to accept a bottle:  http://www.llli.org/FAQ/bottle.html

The only advice I can think of is not to attempt bottle feeding when the baby is hungry.  The technique for feeding from a breast or bottle is different, so the baby is having to learn something new.  If he is hungry he won't be interested in trying something new... he will be frustrated because he just wants to feed.  So try at a time when the baby is alert and not too hungry.  After a nap would be the best time I think.  I also think expresed breast milk would be best at first, so at least the smell and taste is familiar for the baby, even if the "how" is different.

Have they tried different positions.... some babies bottlefeed better if they are settled in a baby seat as cuddling makes them expect the breast?

Those are good thoughts, Chuffy, thanks!  She is using expressed milk...don't think she has even tried formula as the nursing has gone so well.    I think maybe your comment about cuddling could be a big part of it, and I'll mention it to her.
