    Smarty Pants Samantha

As some of you all know my daughter Samantha is 3. Just turned 3 in July.

Well just got back from having Samantha screened for preschool.

And even though I knew she probably wouldnt get in I took her anyways.

I was right. She is too smart to get in this year.

She is a little upset at the moment because she really wants to go to school.

Hope she keeps that attitude for when she HAS to go to school.

They said she scored in the 4 year old range on most things and the 5 year old range on a couple things.

That sounds great that she's so smart...I think.  I don't get it.  Why can't she go to school if she is smart....is it a special program

might be like here where preschools run by the city with tax funds are only for kids who need a head start...due to language, disability or economic circumstance. They figure if you as a parent really want to send your kiddo to preschool you can afford to do so privately. Now I don't agree as I think there's more to school than the ABC's that being social issues, routines, following the instructions of adults other than parents etc.

BUT I do know the numbers they have back up that those specific groups I mention do really need some help...and if they did let our normal to above average kiddos in there they'd likely be very bored due to the extra time the teacher would need to spend with the other groups..so...

It's a wash really...and they are right...IF I wanted Elias to do preschool badly enough we could have paid to send him someplace...still would have been nice to be able to send him to PreK at his assigned school tho!

At 4 she can go. But at 3 they only allow them in if they have problems. Like developmental, speech, motor, language, social, etc. So if they are 3 and dont do what 3 years old should be doing then they work with them.

And Samantha was mainly in the 4 year old range.A couple things she did had her in the 5 year old range.

ETA: Just saw Gina's post. Exactly what she said. Preschool here is only 3 hours a day 4 days a week. I just thought I would give it a try. Samantha would have loved it but at least she will be able to next year. And hey I found out she was as smart as we thought!!

She would really enjoy the new Leapfrog Leapster2 (teaching games) and the new Leapfrog Tag (reading)  Those two products allow the parents to plug them into a computer and monitor the child's progress.  They are rated for children 4-8, but some of the games are rated up to 10.

eBay is a good place to get some of the games (sold separately, of course).  Send me an email and I will send you a copy of an email that I wrote for a friend a couple of weeks ago.  It shows just how much cheaper some of the games are (e.g. $104.99 --> $8.99).

I haven't shopped on eBay to see if the Leapster2 and Tag are cheaper there, but it would be worth a look.

NOTE:  All the Leapster games play on all the Leapster units.  The Leapster2 unit is the only one that plugs into a computer for parental monitoring.
