    Ted: Wot's in Mi House?

Ted hates the Maremmas.  I don't know why - it's been that way since he was a wee thing, the first day he was here.  It's time for him to Get. Over. It!  'Cause look who's coming to dinner this week!

Min just got spayed and I'm taking the opportunity to socialize her and really get her in shape physically.  When she was loose, she was still so nervous about us that she'd often choose not to come up to eat.  It made it difficult to get to to gain the weight she needed - we did, but just barely and I'm still not happy.  The vet says she's fine for now, but I'd like to see some heft to her before the intense work of winter starts.  Her tuck isn't really that dramatic, by the way, she was shaved for the surgery, of course.

Ted's taking it pretty philosophically - he's ignoring her for now.  Actually, since he's usually a very friendly, playful dog, he's Ideareally[/i] pretending she doesn't exist.

It's bizarre having such a huge dog in the house. She's the biggest dog I've ever had inside, except once when a friend with a Scottish Deerhound visited - wow, was that ever a big dog. But that dog didn't stay long.

To anyone who ever hesitated to adopt an older dog that was "outside only" - Min has made a perfect transition to housedog status. She's nervous, of course, but in a very reserved, not freakish way. She's not had a single accident except once right after the anesthesia started wearing off and she was disoriented and didn't quite make it to the door. Since then she's had the run of the house and is already on everyone's potty schedule.

I've been brushing her out every night - normally these dogs have naturally nice coats but hers has been only sloowly getting back to normal.

Sorry about the icky picture - my camera just doesn't do right inside.

    Hey there Min!

I don't even notice how big Cleo is now...but when I go my Mom's house, her dog USED to seem large to me and now she's dinky LOL. I know Cleo would never fit into her home from the way it's laid out. Lots of room divisions right in the living areas. Here our living areas are pretty open including the kitchen so it's not even noticeable that Cleo's here sometimes.

We will all be sitting watching TV and Lily will say "can I let Cleo inside?" and I'll say "Umm..she's been in here for hours! She's laying over there in the hall" LOL.

Becca, she's gorgeous!  I'm all about adopting older or senior dogs.  Maghee is a dream.  She's 8.5 years old & trained so nicely.  Sure she has some issues but they are minimal.  Nothing that time, patience & treats won't cure. :o)

Yea my family says all the time why don't I bring Bugsy up for a visit - he would smash into everything at my mom's and pretty much take up the room in any room he laid down in Big Smile

Here though I don't even think he's that big

     Psssst.  Ted.  It's an *angel*.

Yeah OK he probably won't buy that LOL.  Deal with it Ted, and maybe you'll learn that Maremmas are wonderful things.

That's a cool looking dog! Wikipedia puts that breed between 65 and 110 lbs..Where does she fit on that scale? Just wondering what you consider "big".Jewel goes 85 lbs. and I think of her as big but sometimes others consider her medium.I like the idea of adopting an older dog.I'm always shocked and saddened at all the senior dogs in our  shelter here.In my opinion the last five years of Jewel's life have brought us more happiness than her first five.

Min weighed in Monday at 75 pounds exactly, but she needs to gain at least 15 pounds, if not more.  It will probably take about a year to get her into optimum condition!  She's the second tallest dog here, only an inch shy of my male Maremma, who is the size of a Great Pyrenees.  I've fostered purebred GSDs, and a GP/BC mix last year, that would be dwarfed by this girl.  From what I can tell she's a very good type according to working dog Italian standards - they seem to be tallish and lanky.  My male is short for a male, and very stocky.

It's unbelievable how many senior dogs get turned in.  I just heard from someone who adopted an eight year old dog from me ten years ago - the dog had passed away quietly, in almost perfect health except for tooth problems - his heart finally gave out.  He had, before we found out about him, spent a whole year of his life in a shelter - that was the only thing his adoptive parents said they regretted, that wasted year.  These dogs have so much to offer and so many of them are lost, passed over just because they are mature - people don't know how much of a plus that is!

I wanted to be a foster home that specialized in oldsters, but my resources got turned in another direction - I'll never know why, but that's the way it goes.  Thankfully there are others who do open their doors to the old guys.

Awww, poor Ted!!  The *least*  Mom could have done was give you a dog that was easy to ignore. Ya know, something that doesn't take up the whole room....
