Firefighters remove stuck toilet seat from child's head

PORTSMOUTH — Firefighters were called to a residential day care center Wednesday morning to remove a child-sized toilet seat from a child’s head.
"There were no tears shed until after the seat removal," said Fire Capt. Ken Smith.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the residence on August 6 at 10:40 a.m., when Smith said he assisted a girl about two-and-one-half years old who was wearing the toilet seat "like a necklace." The child care provider had already applied petroleum jelly to the seat in an effort to remove it, but was unsuccessful, said Smith.
"She had the right idea," said the fire captain. "She just needed an extra set of hands."
Smith said the child was playing with the seat before getting it stuck on her head and that the removal process took less than two minutes.
"Every once in a while you get a call that’s a little out of the ordinary," he said. "This was one of them."
