Ringworm anyone?

    Ringworm anyone?

Has anyone ever dealt with Ringworm before?  In humans?  I'm not 100% but I think Kali might have it.  I've no idea where she would have picked it up, but she has two spots, one on the front of her shoulder, and one on the back of her leg.  I've been looking it up, and so far all I can find is that its only mildly contagious, its zoonotic so to check the dogs, and that its treated over the counter.  I did an image search and her's look like the mild cases that came up on that.  Basically, just little red circle rashes.  They don't itch though, and everything says they normally do.

Anyway, as for the over the counter ointment that is used to treat it, any ideas what that is?  I have polysporin, but thats it.

Oh and do you think it is ringworm?  Are there other things it could be?  We have Eczema in the family.  Kale has it pretty bad and I've had it on my hands on occasion.

I've had ringworm before and over the counter fungal medicines worked. It's been a long time, but I think it was called Lotrimin? I got ringworm from a stray cat that had bald spots (didn't know at the time it was ringworm), so I petted the cat and then scratched at some mosquito bites. Doh!! So what I ended up with what I thought was a big, VERY itchy mosquito bite- ringworm. It took weeks of using the over the counter cream, but it went away. Smile

Yep, DH gets it a lot because he works with at-risk kids (very poor families, many of them neglected and abused, often very unhealthy and carrying these fungi or parasites).  He typically gets it on his chest and it spreads because for his "other" job he's a security officer and has to wear a uniform even if it's 95 and humid outside on his beat.

They look like red circles, about the size of small coins.  DH's doesn't itch or scab over, just the red circles.  He treats it with Lamasil.  Ringworm is actually a fungus, not a worm.  My mom says she gets little spots on her chin because she also works with unhealthy kids in an inner city day care and she treats hers by dabbing bleach on it.  You would need an anti-fungal cream.  I think DH puts it on twice a day for at least a week.

I've never gotten it despite DH having it all over his chest for months. Our doc said some people are more susceptible than others, I may never get it and he may have it constantly.

Hmmm...that's not us, but I wonder if maybe it could have come from in the pool?  All of the neighborhood kids were in there for like 3 days before I put chlorine in it.  I wonder if thats where it came from?  Its so weird cause Kali has got to be the cleanest kid I have ever seen.  We go through about 10 washcloths a day by her choice.  Sticky hands are not acceptable to her, nor is a dirty face.  And skip a bath????!!! Forget about it!  The world as we know it would end for sure.  The only thing  she doesn't care about is her feet, but is there anything there?  Nope of course not.

I had it once. It was on my ankle and didn't itch at all. Just a strange red circle. I hardly noticed it until a coworker looked down and sort of shrieked "oooohhh - ringworm!!!" loud enough for the whole office to hear. Now I know that it's nothing to be ashaned of, but at the time I was mortified. My Dr. said some people are just more susceptible than others. He said he sees it and touches it all the time and has never contracted it. Anyway, Lotrimin is what he recommended and it worked after a few weeks. From what I remember reading, it can be acquired from the dirt in your garden, so don't stress over it. I actually think I got mine from sitting on the floor of our vet's office while we were having to euthanize our lab, Jake Sad

I brought a kitten home that had ringworm, took her to the vet that night for treatment so she was getting treated. We all ended up getting it me, my bf, my other cat the only one that didn't get it was the dog. But we all ended up getting treated. And I kept the kitten away from everyone for a good few days as well.

So what I am trying to say is it's highly contagious so check your pets. And keep an eye on your family. Easier to treat on people that animals and cheaper for us than pets.

    Good luck

It's not always contagious -- when Leo had ringworm, he had it for a couple months before we were finally able to get to a vet. The whole time, none of the other dogs caught it and neither did I. And we were very exposed to him...I treated it with tinactin ~ the vet's recommendation didn't work, but the tinactin spray cleared it up very quickly.

It could just be little spots of eczema. Addisen has had a couple of spots, which seem to come out when she's teething. We mix hydrocortisone and lotrimin together and put it on for a few days. For whatever reason, that makes it go away pretty quickly.

Ringworm is a fungal infection -- and in HUMANS it typically starts as a dark red "ring" (hence "ringworm";) -- not a small circle rash usually.  On a dog the hair will fall out and you don't usually see a 'ring'.  But it can also be 50 different types -- but the treatments for it are typically anti-fungals.  If you have miconazole (Monistat 7, Micatin foot stuff) you can try or just try a dot of tea tree oil.

It's more contagious between children -- so you may want to have it checked out and talk to her teacher -- there may be another child known to have it.

Um...Kali doesn't have a teacher.  She's not even 2 yet.  But she does play with a few of the kids around the neighborhood, so I'll ask around, or at least give them a heads up.  The rash is a circle....well a ring.  There's a clear hole in the middle that is not rashy.  The one on her leg is quite a bit bigger, and its been there longer.  The one on her shoulder is new, like yesterday.  It maybe just a tad smaller than a dime.  I have Tea Tree oil, so I'll try that, until I can get to the store.

you can pick ringworm up just by walking oustide - has nothing to do with your financial status.....

my mom got it a while back. Some people are more apt to get it than others. For instance, I can handle a litter of kittens, without gloves, and not get the fungus. Others, can't. (not that I'm advocating to try this... it's just by my expierence!)

The worst part about ringworm (so I'm told!) is the itchy-ness. My mom just picked a fungal cream up from the gorcery store, Lamacil is one I think. If it doesn't start to clear up, I would have it checked by the doctor. Lots of hand washing, sanatizers, and you should be just fine =]

Sorry - I had Kale and Kali confoosed!!  ringworm is super easy to pick up from odd places, and it can transfer with a touch and at her age if she's teething or something then the immune system is a bit droopy.

If it were *me* I'd change her bedding daily and I'd probably segregate her laundry and do that in two washes -- the first with a bit of Lysol in it and then the second wash literally to wash out any residue of harsh stuff remaining from the first.  But that way it won't transfer as easily.  Just a thot.

    • Gold Top Dog

hmmm... good idea about the lysol in the wash, although - I think one wash would suffice, as long as you have it set on HOT.

Sounds like ringworm to me. My mom dealt with it alot when my brother was in highschool. He wrestled and my dad would help coach, so from those gym mats they always had it! If you need me to let me know and I can call and ask one of them what they put on theirs when they got it. I know it was over the counter.
