Flexi question

    Flexi question

I know most of us hate flexi leads with a passion, but I do find them helpful in some situations.  I'm considering purchasing an all belt flexi for use on hikes and while exercising the dogs on the road and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with the all belt leads and/or any input on 16' vs. 26' lengths in this situation.

I currently have a 16' cord flexi, but I've heard the belt ones may not retract as well.

I've got a cord flexi for Casey that we use when we're wandering around the nature parks (not at all crowded places) or if we're going for a walk later at night when there's not a lot of people out. I've not used a belt type - so I can't really give any feedback.

I can't use one for Max, but the dog I had before him did just fine on a 16 ft. flexi.  I haven't used the belt one, but I think if you're not holding the handle in your hand, it would be a lot harder to lock it in place quickly if the need to do that arose.

If your dog is one to try to bite at the leash, don't get it.  Willow bit threw one when we first got her doing a play bite zoomie combo.  Cool

I use a 16' belt flexi rated for 100lbs with my 68lb dog.  We use it when walking the neighborhood and on the trail around a wetland area.  He's great on it.  He seems to know exactly how much length he has to work with and doesn't fight it at all.   I considered buying a 26' one, but it is physically so much bigger and heavier.......and in the areas I use it...26' would be a bit too much.

As far as not retracting....every once in a while it gets hung up.  But that is mostly due to Baily trotting in circles around me trying to pee on everything in range.

I agree they are not the best restraint for every situation, but I like mine for our long walks.

I use a 16ft flexi with my golden retriever (50 lbs) She does great on it, seems to know how much length she has, does not wrap me around trees too oftenBig Smile. She is not much of a puller though. Things don't work as well with Gracie on the flexi, Gracie likes to pretend to charge  dogs when we walk by.........When she gets into her pulling mode she is a little harder to control with the flexi. I also think that a 26' would be quite heavy..

I like our 16' belt flexi.... hate the corded ones.  It does retract a bit differently, but usually only when the belt gets twisted when Sammy would go in circles around us.  It does have its uses though we do have other non-flexi leashes.  I like for him to be able to explore and sniff a bit more to get a bit more out of walk, but we walk in areas where it doesn't really cause problems to use a flexi.

i use a belt flexi and i love it. i had one before and it was aweful! would get twisted and didnt retract. just a nightmare! then i cashed out on a new one. it really was quite expensive (relatively, i'm sure still cheap for you!) but the quality is just unbelievable. the best part about it is it locks itself easier, the more pull you have on a leash, so in a situation where i have my dog run towards something they shouldnt, i only have to press down the button a little bit and it locks itself!

what i'm trying to say is make sure you buy quality. it really matters.

the only flexi I would ever consider buying is the Giant 26' foot all belt one. Friend has one. This thing is NOT going to break, ever, and doesn't cause horrible rope burns like the cord ones, locks and retracts nicely. I personally use a 30-foot line that I manually retract, I just don't think one has any ability to exert emergency control over a dog on a flexi. I can manually reel in a dog on a long line if needed but if your dog is at the end of the flexi and decides to ignore you there' s nothing you can do. Once you get a bit of practice in on handling a long line it's not difficult.

that's not true.... i can just as much manually retract my dog with an all belt flexi as i could with a long line. i do it all the time. i admit i dont have big dogs, but i just dont see what the difference is. i have grabbed the belt of the flexi to get my dog back to me many times. it doesnt feel any different than a normal leash....

I use flexis in some circumstances, when the boys can't be off leash but can have room to roam and sniff back and forth as hunting dogs do.  I have a cord and a belt one simply because I couldn't find a cord one the last time I was shopping.

Quality definitely matters, as does constant observation when using them as they can become tangled or twisted rather quickly.  I can real in my larger dogs on the flexi with no problem, it just takes practise.
