Ari's first camping experience!

    Ari's first camping experience!

Whew was that a crazy time!  We picked Chocura Camping Village in the White Mountains (New Hampshire) since it's roughly an hour drive from where we live (maybe a little over) - so close enough to come home should Ari become too much to handle, hurt or anything else that could go wrong.  Chocura is DOG FRIENDLY.  To the point they've added a fenced in area, a couple outdoor kennels (for a free you can have your dog watched, it's a modest fee and they are watched over while in there not just stuck in the kennel and left alone) and a small doggy beach area (it's a little pond like area fed by running water good for splashing and swimming plus benches for the humans)!

Ari was sooo confused when we started packing up on Wednesday.  Actually she was a little nervous it seemed - probably thinking we were leaving without her.  That all changed when I brought out her pink bag.  The pink bag means she's going somewhere in the car.  She then proceeded to act like a zoomy puppy and get all sorts of excited!

Our trip started off on a bad note however.  We were going to take my car since it's roomier than my SO's.  Unfortunately upon starting my vehicle my "check engine light came on".  I've had some "mysterious problem" for a while now that 3 mechanics (2 of which I keep going back to repetedly to diagnose this issue) cannot find ANYTHING WRONG.  Despite there being something very wrong with my car.  But anyway....we loaded up my SO's car, including Ari who thought it was super cool to be in a new car (she's never been in his, b/c frankly my SO is a PIG about his car and it was nowhere near puppy proof - fast food wrappers, empty cans of soda, crumbs etc etc Ick!   She does typically really well in the car, and she chewed on her bully stick most of the time (she only gets bully's in the car so she does behave!).

At the site I tethered her to a tree and we set up camp.  The look on her face was like WTF!  Then it was like OMG I'm OUTSIDE, look dirt to dig, dirt to eat, roots to burrow for (after this trip I'm convinced she's half pig).  We then brought her to the fenced in area and let her walk around (leashed since there were dogs in the kennel - and the kennel abuts the fenced area so we did not want her antagonizing the pups).  We worked on some obedience.  Oddly enough this dog has never had an issue doing a sit or touch in "different" environments which is so great!

Then back to the site for a bit to introduce her to the tent - which she thought was great, but unfortunatley had so many hanging things for her to chew on - she loves anything string like and has an obsession with tags!  We then headed down to the doggy beach area.  OMG she dove into the water like a natural water dog.  I think the river by us is a tad too cold for her, and this pond/mini lake was just right.  We tossed the stick around for a bit, and then called it quits after about 20 minutes of swimming - since she never can tell when she's tired.  The look on her face was worth everything, big old grin, tongue out of the side of her mouth, and happy shining eyes.  Back at the site she crashed for a good long nap, so her humans could read for a bit, unwind and then get dinner going.  Her favorite thing at the site was the water spicket.  Good fun to be had there biting at the water!

Our first night in the tent included some bratty puppy action.  Bratty due to her being very very tired.  She's at her behavioral worst when tired.  But she settled down and despite my fears was well behaved through the night sleeping with us.  She has never slept outside of her crate over night and never in such close proximity.

Early AM we woke up (well late for us Ari actually slept in till 7am herself - normally we are up around 5:30am - so this was a LUXURY).  More time in the fenced area, we let her off lead since no one else was there.

Unfortunately it rained a good part of Thursday and trying to be creative in a tent with a puppy who needs to let some energy out got well interesting....but Ari did a lot better than I was expecting.  Later on on Thursday we got more swim time in and she just loved it.  Plus swimming tuckers her out - which her humans love almost as much as seeing the joy in her face while swimming Wink

It was too rainy to start a fire (downpoured) for dinner on Thursday, so Ari got another car trip (she loves the car) while her humans got pizza lol.  We ate it in the car and Ari didn't beg or bother us (she's never gotten people food from our plates or that we are directly eating so while she may beg it doesn't last for more than a minute or two and it's never overly obnxious).

Ari did meet a dog later on Thursday who was older and bigger but the owners said it was fine to let Ari off leash in the fenced area for a romp (we wouldn't since Ari's recall is not solid at all and we would have just left and come back when no one else was there).  But her and the bigger lab mix got along great and both dogs got tuckered out!  We thanked the owener profusely for letting Ari socialize even though she gets over excited - and can be a lot of dog to handle.

Friday we spent our last morning there with a romp in the doggy areas, both the fenced area and the beach.  Packed up and headed home.

Ari had a blast!  She loved being outdoors so much.  Did really well in the tent, the last night she slept right up next too me - awwww.  Swimming, walking, fenced in zoomy area, and being outdoors makes for one happy pooped out puppy!  Pictures to follow and maybe a short video taken from our camera if it came out OK.

Yay!  I'm so glad it went well!

We actually had reservations for that campground for this week, but than we had trees fall on our property on the July 19th thunderstorms and had to cancel so we could spend this week working on tree clean up instead.

Were there a lot of other dogs there?  I'm sure there must have been, we are hoping to go up in a few weeks possibly.  I've never seen such a dog friendly campground!

    Yay for you and Ari!

That sounds like an awesome campsite.  Is it well treed and all for the humans?

I've never had pizza while camping...I'll have to keep that in mind for our next trip.  Wink

There were definately plenty of other dogs there - but surprisingly the fenced dog area we mostly had to ourselves!

Yup pizza while camping.  I couldn't eat another sandwich and all we brought was sandwich stuff and stuff to grill :)  Besides we all needed a car ride, being cooped up in the tent while it downpours gets old after awhile!

The campsite is not our ideal for camping (before Ari my SO and I would just pull off to the type of sites you self serve (put money into a box, outhouse....no showers ---although for longer trips I like having a shower option), but it was fairly well wooded, and better than we were expecting.  It's a KOA site for anyone familiar with that chain, so it's also very kid/family friendly, so lots of kids running amok, but not too bad all things considered.  VERY nice bathroom facilities and showers.  Seriously, the bathrooms were far superior to any other campsite, and any fast food resturaunt I've ever been in!  There is a LOT to do there, fishing, human beach, organized activities (for kids), rec hall (I don't care for these).  The sites themselves are plenty big, and kept clean and they rake them after each visitor leaves.  Staff is VERY friendly and professional and cheery.

We'll definately go back with Ari, having a place for her to swim that's dog dedicated is a HUGE bonus.  I would have put up with the type of campsite we went to in Ohio (totally flat, hardly any trees, wide open, tiny sites and no privacy) just to see Ari get to swim and have a fenced area to run in.
