As for the self checkouts, I HATE them.  I am paying enough as it is--they can ring the sutff up for me.

Ditto!  Besides, I saw some almost get decapitated once at Home Depot by a guy trying to run fencing through the self-checkout. Surprise

It normally wouldn't faze me.  I am rather passive and don't worry about it.  However, if I was in pain it would faze me and I probably would have said something about it, politely.

However, I HATE when people check out of the 10 items or less with more than 10 items.  I normally have one or two and then the person in front of me has a bazillion.  Sometimes when that happens I go to a diferent line and some nice elderly lady will usually let me in front of her since I only have one item.

I have been known to cheat the "12 items or fewer" lanes a few times, but I promise you this, I can scan, bag, and pay for 20 items twice as fast as the majority of people trying to do 5 items.  I know how many seconds I have to wait before I can scan the next item, I have bulk codes memorized, my debit card is out and in my mouth when I start scanning, and I know the process by heart don't have to listen to the machine for instructions.  Why does it seem that no matter where I go - grocery store, fast food, bank, check-ins... -  I seem to get done in half the time as everyone else?

*cough* don't forget ATM's, I think I can do 10 transactions in the time it takes someone to do 1 at an ATM.

I love the self checkouts as long as no one is in front of me. I don't like too much waiting for people who don't know how to use them. I'm really fast at them and know the tricks to ring things up too, but thats probably just because of the part time jobs I have had in the past. Plus, the days I just don't feel like talking to anyone, I don't have to with the self checkouts.

Sometimes I think that stores should require people to pass an aptitude test before allowing them use of the self checkouts.

I hear you on that one.  My favorite is when the person has an overflowing cart and tries to go through the self checkout and with three insane kids and thinks it would be fun to let them do it!!!  AAAAHHHH!!!!

I love me some self checkout...but agree that people who don't know how to use them shouldn't choose a really busy time to learn LOL.

Very true!!  Especially if you're at Home Depot checking out boards or some kind of tools that are 8 ft . long.

Oh I miss the self check outs at Walmart!  They don't have them here yet, but they had them in Thunder Bay.  The turnover of cashiers there is so big, that you almost always got a newbie that had no idea what they were doing.  Somebody calling for a CSM every three seconds and even if it was the shortest line to begin with you realize that the line beside you has gone through 18 people, while your cashier is still struggling to figure out the milk coupon from they senior in front of you.  Its like playing russian roullette.  So whenever possible I went to the self checkouts.  I did my fair time on the tills at Walmart when I worked there, so its way faster for me to do the self checkout most of the time.

Here, I choose my lines based on the cashier.  There are about 3 that I go to if at all possible.  There are 2 that I avoid at all costs.  That is, I will stand in a 12 person lineup to go to one of the first 3, and avoid the last 2 even if the last 2 are red lining.

I wish we had self checkouts here! It would make my life that much easier.. All the stores around here hire people based on looks only. HONEST! Lol.  I did 4 years as a cashier and yet when I went back to see if I could my old job back, they said no. Looking at all the new people, I saw why. I'm not that cute *shrugs* But I knew how to make a line go faster then 10 minutes a person. Then when I try and help the cashier when they start to look flustered, I get the look of "What do you know? You're just a customer" It's a good thing the manager is a friend of mine otherwise I might have lost it a few times. *sigh*

Yep.. Really want the self checkouts here..

Agree, you'd think that'd be common sense too. I mean, if you think its going to be hard to maneuver the barcode over the scanner then you shouldn't go through the self checkout.

That's funny. When the Best Buy opened around where I live about 5 years ago, the two managers of cashiers/customer service were two guys. We all interviewed and when we started working we were ALL girls around the same age, between 16-21. Ok, so the rumor going around was these guys only hired the girls they thought were cute and we became known as the store with the best looking cashiers. These are also the same guys that got fired within 1 year of the store opening though.

Pfft... if the stores around here did that, at least the experience might be a little better.  They don't.  The cashiers here are all snaggle toothed little girls that obviously never won any personality contest either.  The only ones I like are one older lady, and 2 younger, fairly large girls that always seem genuinely happy to see you.

Heh, my mom always has some favorites she checks out with.  I always use the self checkout line.

Sometimes I wish checkers were like waiters, but you just tip the ones that have better service.  I think it would make things go a lot smoother and I wouldn't mind paying a few extra dollars for a nice checkout person.  It probably wouldn't even have to be that much.  Some places there are so many people going through the lines that 50 cents can add up to a lot.
