    Interesting article...

     http://www.koco.com/news/16860079/detail.html

Posting because even the idea of this is foreign to me...we have guns here but the gun culture is very different.  I am personally shocked by the idea of ANYONE using a semiautomatic assault rifle as a giveaway to teenagers, but especially from a church which I would think preaches nonviolence?

However....I am open to arguments as to why this is not unreasonable, as I say it's simply alien to me and I can't wrap my head around it.

It looks like it got cancelled so...apparently more than a few folks thought it was a bit daft. It's Oklahoma Kate...that's all I'll say. I go there many times thruout the year to visit and the people there are some of the nicest I've met...but...it's Oklahoma. They are actually considering naming their newly acquired Basketball team after flatulence...Wink

Um, yeah, that's NOT the norm over here either!

It was apparently cancelled because the guy giving the gun away hurt his foot and can't make it.  They plan to give the gun away next year instead....of course, that does sound better than "sorry, we were idiots", so who knows?

    And the basketball team...that's funny.

Lordy!  Even the folks who think they need a gun in  their bedside table for protection don't have semi-automatics.  Or do they? Embarrassed I have a friend who used to have a semi-automatic ... said he needed because he used to go off in the hills somewhere to hunt wild boar. I never could figure that one out.  Didn't the cavemen used to be able to bring down a giant mastadon with just a few spears?

They do if the gun they are keeping in their bedside table is a pistol

Many if not most rifles used for hunting are "semi-automatic".  All "semi-automatic" means is that once a round is fired the next round is chambered by the energy of the gases produced by the expended round.

I do not know the details of this church giveaway so I cannot comment as to whether or not it is good or bad.  I and virtually every other kid I knew owned rifles as a teenager, my son owned a rifle as a teenager (in fact he was given the first rifle I ever owned).  Every state allows teenagers to hunt so having a rifle as a teenager is very common.

Mark, you have a good point. I learned how to shoot a semi-auto shotgun from a church menber when I went to church as a young man. I was going to shoot left handed but was cautioned to shoot right handed. The shell automatically ejects out the port, which is to the right.

It is not uncommon in rural communities for many to enjoy hunting as part of a family experience and receiving such a rifle would be a gift. The question is, what do they mean by assault rifle? For example, the .308 was favored in marine sniper training but it is also good for hunting deer and large game. Most guys I know hunt with either a .243 or a .223. Small game might only require a 4-10.

So, yeah, one might think it's in bad taste. Why don't they make the giveaway a fancy bible or even a cd of christian music? Or a book of restaraunt coupons.

I have one Oklahoma joke that's clean but I might hurt the feelings of any from the Sooner State.

But I do have another one that's not quite as stinging.

Ya'll know that anyone north of the Red River is a yankee.

    Thankyouverymuch.
