Really bad sunburn...ideas?

The tea works well. Nature's Specialties Sun Guard (DOG CONDITONER LOL!) works incredibly well. It's a leave on conditioner with built in SPF. My absolute favorite burn product is by Solar Recover. It's a spray called Save Your Skin. I've been *blistered* before (from a fajita plate, but still.... works on any type of burn), and it calmed the burn right down. Not a home remedy, but something to keep on hand for these situations...

Speaking with almost 40 years of Florida living :

Advice for future exposure - apply your sunscreen about a 1/2 hour PRIOR to your exposure to sun (not at the beach).  The chemicals in the sunscreen take time to absorb and if you apply at the pool/beach you tend to sweat out most of the protection.  Reapply liberally after swimming etc. even if it says waterproof.

As for the after effects of too much sun - I use Bendryl/Advil and Aloe Vera sprays with Lidocaine.  Also soaking in Aveeno oatmeal bath or oatmeal/vinegar bath helps (if you can stand it).

You've gotten some good advice.  I burned badly in my first and last fake bake experience, and developed a heat rash.  Ibuprofen works well to keep the swelling down and helps with the pain.

In between oatmeal bath soakings, I would apply (several times a day) Gold Bond medicated lotion.  It's soothing and keeps your skin hydrated.  Aloe works for me, but it's so darn sticky that I like the GB better.

Having very fair skin & green eyes (mom is a blue eyed redhead) I have had my share of sunburns.  Good old Noxema skin cream cools and soothes the burn.  Also soaking in cold water for a long time relieves the burn and soaks away the redness.  I discovered this by accident.  As a young adult I "prepared" for a lake party the day before trying to even up my "tan" (darker shade of white?!?) by sunbathing in my swimsuit so that my lower back and my upper backside of my legs "matched" the rest of my tan from wearing shorts. I burned; it was so painful that at the party I sat in an inner tube and just floated in the lake along the shady shore for at least a couple of hours while others swam and water skied.  Amazingly I realized when I got out of the lake I had no more redness and no more pain!
