Bad to great morning all in 60 minutes!

My purse was stolen this morning...and recovered.

I stopped at the gas station I have been stopping at for 4 years, coffee, gas, conversation, munchies. I thought I had locked my purse in the car, but I guess not. Some young male on a bike decided he would look cool wearing my purse, and decided he did not need permission to take it. He thought wrong.

2 customers saw him, and stared at him while he went into my car, a 3rd came in to find me. The guy took off, with his new accessory and the manager and I followed in our cars, but we lost him. I went on to work, I had cards to cancel, checking account to close, new license and most importantly I had to stop and close the business debit card, which I carry.

While I was on my way to work, the manager and staff, Mike, Jenn, Lulu and Carrie reviews the tapes. I had a fit to be tied meltdown on the way to work, got in and woke the bear (DH), I not only had my cards, I had his. I then got on the phone to cancel the business debit card. Thankfully they let me, even though I am not on the account. While I was looking for the number to cancel our cards and checking accounts, the DH called me. They had found my purse! WITH EVERYTHING INSIDE!

While watching the tape they realized he knew he was being watched (actually several men were watching and or approaching him at one point) and had headed to some bushes, the manager sent one of the girls to check and sure enough she found my purse, called my husband and he called me.

Sigh............I had bad thoughts for this person. But now I'm just grateful that I have my stuff.

Wow - thank goodness for the happy ending.  It's such a nightmare to cancel everything and get all your cards re-issued - not to mention having to worry everyday about identity theft !!!

    Glad you got everything back.

Wow, glad things turned around. That's gonna be a pain in the butt to reactivate everything, though; have fun. -_-

I am glad you got your stuff back, but

    • If there was a checkbook in the purse, be sure to look for missing checks in the middle of the pad.
    • If you had your SSN anywhere in your purse (health insurance card?), put a fraud alert on your credit.  The thief may have just written down information.
    • If the thief wrote down a credit card number and the special code on the card, they might be able to change the billing address and order things on-line.

My purse was stolen and the only thing the crooks got that caused me problems was my driver's license.  They rented U-Haul trucks twice and got drugs at an ER once.  I was lucky that I filed a police report.  Be sure that you do in case there is something missing that you haven't noticed yet.  Save the police report ID number.

What good is an ID if no one looks at the picture or compares the signature?    brick wall angry

If you get any indication of ID theft, start a notebook.  Keep track of every phone call (date, time, subject, notes, plus caller's name and title) and each piece of correspondence.  If different locales are involved, you will need to help police share information.

I had to talk to a number of police officers.  A couple of them probably shouldn't have been carrying guns, if you know what I mean.

Thanks everyone. I did file a report, or had one filed for me. I happen to know a couple of Police officers here in town, a beat cop and a detective.

And trust me, I will be watching my credit and everything.

On-line ordering with someone elses number would be really easy to do.  All they would have to say is that they moved.  Also, just in case anyone winds up with your actual card in their hand .... it just dawned on me the other day that I have never, ever, even once been asked for ID in a restaurant.  Stores, yes.  Restaurants - they just take the card, go swipe it and bring it back with the receipt. Depending on their choice of restaurant, that could wind up costing someone a bundle.
