    rwbeagles-our 1st Sunflower opened!

Isn't she pretty? Her name is Darla.

These seeds came from one of our first Swaps...I am pretty sure Sue and Buddy sent them along with those herb seeds. I gave them to Lily and she planted them. Looks like we will have two...she planted them very close and the other shoots are not thriving like the other two. They're a bit over 4' tall or so.

    Love the picture!!!

I love sunflowers. I did my kitchen in a sunflower theme. Next year I will making a flower bed and cant wait to see how my sunflowers will turn out.

Tell Lily she did a good job!!

Wow I love this pic and the comp. of the second pic above (with the leaf sticking out).

yeah I have lately been trying to move beyond taking the obvious pictures from the front, I even took the auto focus off and did manual on some...EEK..baby steps...lol.

That last one is really neat, so many textures and it's almost like the flower is unfolding/moving.

WARNING...PICTURE OF IMO A BEAUTIFUL SPIDER FOLLOWS...

Darla has a "tender", a small pretty green spider that was living on her presumably eating pests before she opened. It was matched perfectly to the green of the bud before she opened...I haven't seen it since she popped....but here's a pic I took of it before, a couple days back...

AS I MENTIONED...A PICTURE OF A SPIDER FOLLOWS...

Cool, that spider must be intended to live there, it matches perfectly.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yay, I love sunflowers! I just realized that I have one in my yard (didn't come up last year for some reason). It's not in bloom yet but the buds are there! Can't wait.

I like non-poisonous spiders.  That one looks like a jewel.  Darla has an emerald pendant!  I've got some sunflowers outside my kitchen window.  I can't wait for them to pop!  They are a smallish, multicolored variety.  Not dwarf - I think they'll be about four to six feet tall as opposed to the mammoth that get to be 11 to 13 feet tall!  We've also got watermelon and zucchini - I can't wait for the zukes to ripen.  Yes, I really love zukes and plan to use as many as I can get off them in dog food, too.

hmm Darla seems to have quite the Court paying homage to her. Her spider is still there along with an UGLY brownish Crab Spider...and the bees have found her now!

Are sunflowers perennials?  I planted some seeds one year and didn't have any luck. Another year I planted grown plants and our yard groundhog ate them all.  I love sunflowers.

    • Gold Top Dog

Think the wilds are perennial..and the domestic ones are annual?

    • Gold Top Dog

This is Darla today...quite a difference eh? I cannot BELIEVE how heavy the center is now...bloated lol. It's hanging over...but I am guessing the seed process is going on now so I haven't trimmed off the head.

Dot, our second sunflower opened a few days ago...here she is...not as pretty as Darla...petals are pointier and sparser...different subspecies maybe?
