    A terrible thing...

I saw a terrible thing and really wish I'd called Animal Control.  I doubt they'd have done anything or come out in time, but if it happens again I'm calling.

Last night DH and I went to the store for some vinegar, and on the way home we saw this pile of rocks and chunks of concrete in the road at a cul-de-sac by our house.  DH had to swerve b/c the concrete chunks were big enough to damage a tire.  As we passed, I noticed a clump of fur that was silver-ish and assumed it was a possum.

Then this morning, DH went for a jog and ran past it to see what happened.  The possum was still dead in the road and the concrete was there.  I don't want to get into too much detail, but he said there were also sticks and things had been done to the possum with rocks and sticks.

Now I'm no lover of possums, but that's no reason to stone one to death and desecrate it with sticks!  I figure it's too late to call AC now, since it's been over a day and we don't know who did it.  They'd probably say "it's just a possum..." because they have so many cases and pet animals to investigate.

I grew up in a really baaad neighborhood and have seen people neglect and mistreat animals (mostly out of indifference and ignorance, not malicious intent), even tease them and do cruel things, but this is the first time I have seen an animal actually tortured to death.  How disgusting!!

YIKES!!! That is strange! I would definitely report it. Investigators recently found raccoons dead and posed with flowers in their hands. Turns out some guy was putting food laced with anti-freeze out. Unfortunately, dogs were poisoned as well and a few died. So if their is some crazies out there it may pose a danger to your dogs if it escalates.

Call the police FIRST.  Then call animal control.  They will send someone out to get the carcas (which is a health hazard in *any* event) but the police need to be aware that someone that's a sicko is doing that.  They'll call animal control but DO follow up.  Then, I'd also place a call to the SPCA - particularly if you feel like you're getting blown off.

I would also report it even if it only means a complaint was on file.  I'm sure we all know that animal torture can be evidence of a bigger problem in young children.  Possibly your report will help in the future.

Absolutely!  I really think someone who is capable of doing something like that would have no problems moving on to another species at some point.

I reported it to Silent Observer.  We just got back from our walk and the possum is still there, sticks poking out of the body.  I thought of taking a pic but it smells too bad now.

Still sick, but is it possible that was done to it after it was dead?
