Alaska & trappers

They should be banned all over the US. Certainly they should be banned on public land frequented by the public.

I agree.  I don't care what people do on private land but on public land where people, dogs, and horses are frequently traveling there is simply no place for them.

To be honest though I am a bit biased--I personally am not a big fan of trapping.  If you're going to kill something get out there and kill it--none of this setting traps nonsense......

I remember my grandpa trapping groundhogs and raccoons on the farm.  Nothing even slightly humane about that.  They'd sit caught (and there was blood, so it could not have been painless) until he got around to checking the traps then he'd beat them to death with a shovel.

there is a point to trap setting. such as with relocating animals (if ANYONE bothered to watch the two videos i posted Hmm )  you catch more of the animals you need.
its easier and faster when you have a job to do, such as removing vermin, or relocating species.
they're more likely to get caught in a trap than they are to walk into a wire cage hidden with a bunch of leaves and limbs.

its also safer for the person doing the trapping to put a noose around the animals neck to subdue it rather than reach into aforementioned wire cage with 30 lbs of pissed off raccoon.
its also safer than using poisoned bait when getting rid of pests. think of it this way.... at least the dog didnt eat rat bait.

i do agree though. they shouldnt be on public land, if there is a ban in the area then you need to look at POACHERS and not tar everyone with the same brush. dont ban breeds and dont ban a tool just because some idiot is using it the wrong way.

So everyone involved in trapping is doing so to relocate species?  I think not.

Actually, cage traps are very effective.  They are used all the time in our area with good results.  Either way, I can't imagine that 30 lbs of caught-in-leg-trap raccoon is much easier to deal with than caught-in-cage raccoon.

I do not believe in traps.......period. Anything that causes an animal to suffer is just plain wrong, there are other, humane ways to handle "situations." People are lazy and don't want to take the time. Just set a trap and walk away........ JMO

I don't think she said that everyone was doing it to relocate species.  Just the same, not everyone is doing it to get rid of vermin.  There are fur trappers too.  In any event, there are responsible trappers and the not so responsible trappers.  Just like with everything else.  Crack down on the irresponsible ones who give the others a bad name.  Does that sound familiar?

Oh and fwiw, a responsible trapper is far from lazy.  Its not a matter of just setting a trap and walking away.

I never said that they should all be cracked down on, but I do *not* believe that it should be allowed on public land used with any frequency by hikers, horseback riders, and dogs.  I can't even imagine how freaked a horse would be if they stepped in one of those traps, humane or not.  Even if it did no physical damage to the horse, you'd likely be scraping the rider off the nearest tree trunk.

IMHO, it is just common sense that there are certain things that you don't do when there are people around.  I have no problem with guns or hunting, and guns can be used safely, but I still don't think it's OK to go deer hunting in public areas where lots of hikers, dog walkers and trail riders are.

but they aren't banned here. People are ALLOWED to go out in the public wilderness areas and put barbaric leg-hold traps out during the season when all sorts of people are out with off-leash dogs. And they aren't trying to relocate animals, they are trying to horribly kill animals for their fur. Which is the only way one can use a leg-hold trap- I'm not sure where you get the idea steel leg-hold traps can be used for relocating animals because they can't because they cause severe damage to the animal. They should be banned. There is NO HUMANE OR SAFE WAY to use a steel jaw leg-hold trap. When people want to relocate animals they generally use cage-traps.

Watch the videos I posted and you will see where I got my info.

and i got the IDEA because i have experience in this department. i KNOW trappers, and i KNOW forestry/wild life officials. i dont just know OF them. i KNOW them. thank you.

tell you what.... i dont like barb wire... my sister nearly got herself killed because some dope rebuilt a fence on public land and left the old wire all over. it blended in so well that we didnt see it. the horse got so tangled up in it, not to mentioned spun around in circles going out of his mind - with my sister hanging on for dear life - So lets ban that horrible stuff because i've had more bad experiences with barb wire than i have with a steel trap.

other thing... if you slip your dog in an area that you know has traps... what the heck are you doing? proving a point?

dont like it? send a note to the local congress to have it removed. Like Huskymom said..... a professional trapper isnt lazy and more than a professional dog owner.

and if you need more proof -

If they were using barbed wire to fence in *public* areas where people commonly rode horses, hiked, and took dogs than I would have objections to that too.....
