Meet my new canine nephew, Monroe

My brother and SIL got a 4mo. black great dane puppy.  He is about 75lbs. already, but we don't know where the weight is.  He is all skin and bones!  The vet that they got him from said that she likes to keep them lean the 1st year to help the joints with the body's rapid growth and then they can fill out the 2nd year.  Here are some photos:

Oh my. Now that is a big dog

His father was 170 and the mother was 160!  The vet is guessing his adult weight around 150-160.  Whew

    Very very cute!!!!

Pardon my ignorance, but what are those on his ears?

I think he is a biiig baby, I would love to snuggle him!!

Monroe is adorable!  He is going to be one handsome boy..  Smile

Our Monroe says that there can be no dog, named Monroe, who isn't a big guy!

there for doc'ing the ears, great danes have floppy ears but for locks and a few old fashion reason they some times doc the ears to make them stand up and pointed. they trim the ears to the shape that is appropretate(sp) then they tab and mold them around something im not sure what never seen the prossess up close and then they let it heal leaving the dogs ears up right and shaped go look up some pictures of great danes with and without doc'ed ears

He is beautiful and a big boy, but based on the pic where he's lying down, he looks a bit TOO thin to me. Am I the only one? Lean is one thing, but being able to see prominent hip and shoulder bones and count ribs from a prone position from a distance is beyond lean IMO.

He's beautiful, nice and shiney!  Look at the size of his paw next to your sister in law's foot, OMG!!

Ohhhhhhhhhhh, he's so handsome!  I just want to kiss that BIG nosie!!

He is tooooo handsome!!! I love the "roadkill" pictureWink

Those are posts in his ears. They hold the cropped ear upright, while the cartilage forms, so the ear stands nice and straight.

I've never seen a black Great Dane before, he's absolutely gorgeous!

thanks everyone!  I was able to spend some good puppy time last week.  I went over and let him out a couple of days while my brother was at his classes.  He is just adorable!  So shy...I've never been around a dog that is this shy.  He hid from me the first day in the kitchen.  He came out right away, tail tucked, but he came to me and let me pet him.  It helped that I had just seen him a day or so before.  He is just a Love Bug and wants to be with you always.  He'll lay on his side by you and you can't help but to pet him, right?  Well, heaven forbid you stop.  He takes that big paw and plops it on you wherever he can reach.  LOL

The thinness:  I know...it seems too thin to me, too.  But, I figure he is being watched by DB and DSIL and the vet.  He is fed three times a day.

His coat looks glossy and the rest of him looks super so the vet's explanation for keeping him extra slim doesn't sound out of the realm of reasonable for his breed.  (What do I know about Danes, though?)

His face is lovely - who wouldn't want that big lug of a head in their laps, waiting for a pat?  Great pics, too - I'm especially fond of the face shot.
