    dog camping tips!

     hey everyone!

we're going tent camping with our dogs this weekend! (shih tzu and lhasa) and so i was just wondering if anyone had any camping tips for bringing ur dog?? we're bringing all their food and flea repellents and all that jazz, but i just thought i'd check and see if anyone has suggestions of other things they bring for their dogs, etc...

so let me know! we're excited. :)

When our two were small (20lbs each) we bought them a wire pen, we were able to adjust the size, so we made it big for them and stuck it under a tree, they had great fun rolling around in the dirt and digging holes to sleep in them in this pen.  They were brought into the trailer at night though, and whenever it seemed like they weren't liking the heat.

Because your dogs are small you might consider that, that way they don't need to be tied

I have a small doggy bin that I carry all of the dogs stuff in. Food, bones, treats, bowls, etc. I also take a bed for my arthritic dog. Plus tie downs. The best purchase I've ever made is a sand tie down for when we're on the beach.

Ha! Kord has his own set of camping gear. Several leashes, food dishes, food containers, blankets, tie out, crate, life preserver, toys, first aid kit for doggies and..............

    Capstar!

My boy is allergic to fleas, so I call and get enough capstar to give him every 24 hours that we are going to be gone plus 24 hours after we return home.

Shampoo!  My dogs get baths when we go to the lake since its so much easier than the bathtub at home.  Brushes are a good idea too for in the bush cause there's all sorts of things that can get stuck in fur.

If I were going camping, I might look at the status of my dogs' leptospirosis vaccination.  Woobie's never had one and Indie has and I'm considering getting Woobie done even though I'm trying to reduce his vaccination schedule.  He's showing more interest in swimming and does splash around in our lake and I worry a bit.  Even with vaccination, I understand that some serovars that aren't covered in the shot are making inroads, so I'd probably keep the dogs away from standing water.

Maybe also get one of those good tick collars and just make sure that they don't mouth them on each other when they play.  It's supposed to be very good but a problem if another dog licks it.  Shoot, I can't remember the name but maybe someone will come along that knows it.

Have fun and take lots of pics!

Take more food for them with you than you think they might eat in a week!  They will be having a blast and burning lots of energy.  We also take some rags to have at the tent door so that we can wipe their feet off on the way in.

I adore tent camping with my crew, they are very polite in the tent but they get soooo hungry!

I would also like to second the tick collar and comb/brush for them or they will be bringing lotsa "stuff" into the tent with them.

I might look at the status of my dogs' leptospirosis vaccination.

Vaccinations take 10 days to 3 weeks to be effective.  A shot given now will not help for this weekend.
