    natural remedies to repel mosquitoes?

Anyone here use anything natural to repel mosquitoes?  I've tried skin so soft in the past but that didn't work.  Someone told me to use pepermint oil....I know eating garlic is supposed to help but do garlic capsules work just as well (I love garlic but I really don't want to eat it every day!).  I used to use DEET/OFF but with a very kissy doggy I don't want her injesting any of that!

I feel like I'm 5 years old again with the chicken pox that's how many bites I have Crying

They ignore my SO and quite frankly I hate him for that lol.  I'm a walking buffett to the buggers!

i heard about the peppermint oil as well...

in my house i actually use one of those evaporators with the weird liquid that you just plug in. that's the only thing that works.

i feel your pain. i'm the same... always attracting all the bugs. the only time i get catch a break is when i'm with my mom. she is "tastier" than me, i guess...

janetmichelle - I'm sorry you feel my pain too.  My house is actually fairly mosquitoe free (one gets in every now and then - but it inevitably finds me and meets its doom - unfortunately usually right after it has already bitten me).  This year here seems to be epic for both mosquitoes and ticks (I found ticks CRAWLING UP the outside of my screens (we have glass sliding doors), like they were looking for a way to break in.  I step outside on our tiny CEMENT patio and I've picked up several ticks.  At least the tick issue seems to have subsided somewhat...but the mosquitoes are having quite the feast.  I wish they found my SO tastier than me - but he has NO mosquito bites and I think that is utterly unfair!

hehe... well i know people that use them outside as well. of course they only work within a certain radius...

I've heard that the skeeters are attracted to those with a Vitamin B deficiency, not sure if that's true but I take a B complex to ward off migraines and they tend to leave me alone at the dog park when the woman next to me is getting eaten.  She swears by dryer sheets and doesn't have as much trouble when she rubs them on herself and her dogs before walks.

I use a lemon eucalyptus lotion.  It's not greasy and says it's all natural.  Jeano, the member here from Alaska, said it is the best mosquito repellant.

    Great link!!

I have citronella planted on my patio as well as several citronella candles around.  I have not seen one single mosquito around my patio...  Of course, dogs don't like citronella, either...

    Interesting suggestions here!

I actually tie dryer sheets around my ankles and wrists and pin them around my waste and anywhere near my neck when I'm going to be digging in the garden.   I get eaten alive by no-seeums/gnats/whatever you call them in your part of the country.   To the point of needing medical assistance!    These dryer sheets work for that.   Not sure about mosquitoes.

But I'm interested in the essential oils listed in that green guide.   I mix 25 eyedroppers of rose geranium oil into 2 Tbl. veggie oil and drop it on old dog collars to keep the ticks away from Rudi & Sophie.  So I bet the other mixtures listed for mosquito repellant would work, too!

Since I am pregnant, I am not supposed to use deet and mosquitos always flock to me!  I found a natural product by off that is lemon eucalyptis.  I can't find anywhere on it where it has deet in it but suppose I could be mistaken.  It does say it is all natural.  It does work, the only problem is that is smells so strong that hubby can hardly stand to be around me when I put it on.  I have to be careful not to get too much, but to get just enough to work.

You might also try some of the citronella candles if you are just staying in a small area.  We have a couple and I often put one right at my feet and it helps as well.

Hey Liesje, does that product smell really strong?  Can you PM me the actual brand?  I might have to try it out.

I will see if I can find the Off lemon eucalyptus - I dont' mind too much about the odor just anything that is non-harmful and keeps the bugs from biting!
