hairball remedy all-round

    hairball remedy all-round

seems when one is hacking up a hairball they all must join in - and they don't even get along that well.

Catnip (Siamese Rescue foster) brought up a cigar-size one, then one of my own meezers felt she much join in the act and leave one.

My yellow tabby male started coughing last night like he's working on one.

Worse part is they are all nearly impossible to treat!!! I was putting light extra virgin olive oil in their food but they sniffed that out quickly and refused to eat. My vet suggested mineral oil and same results. They prefer I put life and limb in jeopardy to treat them.

I have one cat who willingly accepts anything she can swallow - the others I have to smear it on their legs.

What does everyone else do? I have tried the hairball remedy foods but I have one cat who is allergic to many foods and of course the hairball formulas are on her list of causing her to go bald.

I've just given up and resigned myself to the fact that cats puke up. Smile I think, of all of the cats that I've ever had, I've only had one that liked that hairball medicine, so gave up on that. I do feed hairball remedy foods but, I don't think it does much, as I still have the about once a month pukes. Seems just about the time I think.....gee the cats haven't puked in awhile, then the next day or so it happens. I have one that doesn't ever throw up, but the other two do. Seems they save it for after they've eaten some of their canned that I've given them....so nice mess. For some reason the hairball remedy food seems to work for another problem one of our cats has. She has interstitial cystitis and why the food works for that I do not know, but I'm not going to rock the boat, as we had a terrible problem with her and nothing else seemed to work. Perhaps it does help to keep the hairballs to a smaller size and that keeps them from causing pressure on other areas. That's all I can figure.

When my older cat began to develop them, I consulted my cat crazy hairdresser who said a blob of vaseline would work wonders.  And it did!  There is NO holding down Miss Kitty and giving any medicine, she once had an eye infection and my hands and arms were hamburger trying to put in the drops for 10 days.  I just put a quarter-sized blob of vaseline on my finger, snuck up on her like I was going to pet her and smeared it on her fur near her butt.  Worked like a charm.

Now she's on Science Diet hairball formula and hasn't had once since.  I'm so food obsessed with the dogs, I feel guilty giving the cats regular commercial food, but she's old and doing well and I don't want to upset the apple cart.

My biggest problem was keeping Milo or the dogs from eating them when she would hack them up.  Ick!

I picked up some hairball treats. The 2 hairball retrievers Ick! one being my own sealpoint meezer and the other being my current foster, Catnip, are the culprits. Catnip with a cigar-size one......on my hubby's work pants (I found it amusing, some reason he didn't).

These 2 like them. Problem is due to the size of them I think they'd have to eat about 200/day to get enough meds out of it.

I once read something about Vaseline not being ideal. I have to check that out..

I guess you'd say I take the easy way out- I put some Petromalt on Topper's food.  She used to pick it off the top and not always eat it (she gets dry food).  But lately I've been mixing it in with a the tiny bit of canned food that I put her Cosequin in.  I haven't seen a hairball in about a week and a half now.

My cat was puking up hair balls until I switched him to wet Innova Evo. He hasn't puked up a hair ball since. Prior to that he was on wet wellness + salmon oil and was still puking up hair balls and had lots of dander. Wet Evo has taken care of both those problems. It's actually cheaper than wet wellness food too.

I've tried Wellness wet foods - my cats think I'm trying to poison them Tongue Tied

I did get some hairball treats and 3 will eat them, 2 turn up their noses. I was reading on the Vaseline. It's good for infrequent use and since my foster is still working on hairball upchucking (coughing) I'm going to use some Vaseline to see if it'll help her more.

Btw, I also have a waterless foaming shampoo for cats by Miracle Coat. Every week or so, I suds him up and rub it in then brush. I believe that helps the most with getting all of that extra hair out that the cat would normally get in it's belly by cleaning himself.
