pros and cons to different kinds of crates?

I too use the zip ties, mostly when flying I alternate zips for screws as I want the added protection as I have seen the screws strip out and fall off. I also make sure that my screws are facing down with the twisty on the bottom, even if it strips out the dogs doesn't always *know* they can get out unless you have a case of SA who is pretty wild.

I find them REALLY handy.  When I need to move crates and dogs to the RV I could spend alllll day getting those danged things out, where with zip ties, a snip or two and the crates are apart.  And, in a few seconds, reassembled.  good idea for flying too.

I use the wire crates for home and mesh travel ones for trials.  Our lab has never cared if the crate is covered or not, I don't think she gets cold.  But Dasher prefers his crate covered.  He also likes to lean up on the sides so I got him the cratewear cover that also comes with the bumpers and he loves it!!  Made a huge difference.  I did have to wait to get this as when we was younger he would rip any blanket you would drape across the kennel, he is now not so destructive[;)]  One thing that I like about his crate is how it opens.  It folds open, like a garage door, which makes it nearly impossible for him to let himself out.  Here is a picture of it. (Note: this is not my dog, just a picture from the catalog)

I prefer the plastic crates, rather than the wire ones, but I only have had suitcase folding style ones. Max busted out of his wire crate, and the dog we had before wouldn't stay in a wire crate either. Max seems to like his plastic crate better, or at least I think he likes it better. It took forever to actually train him to go in the wire crate, and we were luring him into the wire crate for a long time, until I spent a weekend clicker training him to go in it. I never had to train him to go in the plastic crate, I just have to get his kong, a cup of yogurt, or whatever he's gonna get in there, and he races to get in it.

I like the plastic crates because of the dual purpose of the den at home and you can use them to fly with.  1 crate, two purposes.

Glenda, didn't think about the zip ties for flying, will the airlines allow you to do that?  Alternate a zip tie and the screws?  Also, good point of putting the screws in from the top for a flight.  Thanks.

I can't answer on the airlines....I hate to fly myself and my dogs are big enough that they would have to go in cargo, so no airplane rides for them!  Ever!
