    Frontline on puppy

Can I put some of Shailer's frontline on Snow? I will not put the whole thing maybe just 1/2? I think he is older than 8 weeks so would it be safe? I just gave him a bath and he was covered with fleas. I don't have anything for puppies but I know Frontline is safe for them. Or should I wait for 7 days and give him another bath like the shampoo instructions say? I hate to give him baths so often.

First, I don't think you are supposed to apply Frontline within 2 days of bathing.  Second, I'd wait and apply Frontline, not another bath.  Flea baths do not kill fleas.  Capstar and IGRs are the only things that kill them, short of smashing them (and even then, I squished one until the guts came out and the thing STILL jumped off my desk!).  I don't know about dosage, but I would not do it since there's a big size difference.  It's not just the amount, but the concentration.  I would go to a vet and buy the right dosage for the dog's weight, and also get Capstar tablets and give Snow one each day for the next 2-3 days.  That will be way more effective than flea baths, and in my experience Capstar was cheaper than flea shampoo (which did nothing).

The thing is that Snow is not mine. I am just dog sitting until his owner desides to take him back or tell me to find a home for him.

    You have some choices

    • Put up with the fleas (not a good idea on such a young pup).
    • Get some original formula Dawn dishwashing liquid.  Lather up the pup and let the suds sit for several minutes.  This will stun or suffocate the fleas.  Comb out the fleas rinsing the comb into a solution of Dawn.  When you are finished, pour the solution down the drain and follow that with some bleach.  Do NOT let the pup get chilled.
    • Buy some Capstar tablets (a lot less work than the Dawn).  $3 per tablet when ordered from that site, but that would take too long.  You could get one or two from your vet.  The tablets work for 24 hours and would get rid of the initial infestation.
    • Give a dose of Frontline.  Your instructions should tell you how long before/after a bath to do it.  Frontline uses the body's oils to spread over the body, so you will delay the effectiveness if you give it right after a bath.

The problem with using Frontline, of course, is figuring out the dosage.  The smallest package is for 1-22 lbs so there is obviously some leeway.

Question:   Do all sizes of Frontline have the same concentration of the active ingredient (Fipronil)?  The following web site says "yes".

http://tinyurl.com/3nzm8q   -   an eBay site (with a couple of typos fixed below)

You will receive Frontline Plus tubes for a large dog.  The Frontline Plus formula is the exact same for every size dog.  The only difference in the tubes is the quantity.  For a small dog or puppy, 1-22 pounds, the monthly dosage is 0.67 ml.  The tubes you will receive are 4.02 ml.  You will divide this into twelve (12) doses of 0.67 each, which will last you twelve months.  Vets have been using this method for years to save money!

You will receive two (2) extra large 4.02 m1 tubes of Frontline Plus, an amber glass vial in which you will store the future doses, and a sterile syringe that is clearly marked with which you can apply the 0.67 ml monthly dosage to your dog.

These "kits" are also sold on Amazon (search for "Frontline kit dog";).

ETA:  On another page the same vendor says "For a medium dog, 23-44 pounds, the monthly dosage is 1.34 ml."
