    Shout out to the pitties!

I just want to say I have never really loved or not loved pitties. I've been honestly nervous around them because when I was 10 years old a pit/mastiff tore up my hand/wrist and needed 17 stitches- I was walking by a women w/ her dog on the side walk and the dog just grabbed my hand and wouldn't let go, the dog has a history of unprovoked attacks. Not fun! Anyways, I met a guy with the SWEETEST pittie! I would've taken this dog home in a heart beat. It was a 2 year old, female, black and white, named Lexi. He kept calling her "sexy Lexi" and she would wiggle all over the place, and it looked like she was smiling. What a good, mellow, sweet, smart, pretty dog. We were at the dog park and she just stayed with him, off leash, she'd sniff other dogs and look up at him like, "Ok, I said hi, can we go?". He told me he got her from a friend who rescued her from a nasty drug dealer when she was only 8 weeks old. But I could just tell this guy loved her and was taking very good care of her.

So, I just feel good about meeting and petting a pittie and not having that nervous (pit in my stomache) feeling. Yes

Ooh ooh ooh that just warmed my heart! That is how a real pittie is supposed to be. All wiggly and goofy, LOL!

You've chimed in and tried to be diplomatic in a lot of pit bull convo's and I've appreciated your input but I always sensed hesitancy (which is totally ok and with good reason) so I am so so super excited to hear you got to see one at its best!

Gosh I wish they all had such good owners!

I'm so glad that you got to meet 'sexy Lexi' so you could see a true Pittie attitude!  She sounds like a gem, and so does the guy too! Wink

My neighbor's have a beautiful pittie.  Unfortunately, they try to make him look tough and use him to look tough themselves, swearing at him, hitting him, and yanking him around on a prong collar.  They also put a harness on him and tie him to a pile of bricks so if he wants to get around he has to pull them.  Despite all their efforts....he is the sweetest dog!  Often he escapes from them (b/c they do no REAL training) and runs into my yard when my dogs are playing.  He just joins right in the fun and has never shown any aggression toward me or my dogs.  They always leave him out on their deck.  He barks and barks at us, but if you stop and look at him, he is whining b/c he wants to come play, not growling.

Yay! good story. I had never really met one until i worked at a vet clinic about 4 years ago. Since then, they have exploded in popularity around here. To this day, i have never met a nasty pit bull, and i've probably met over 100!!! Honestly, i think they have awesome personalities and they are one of my favorite breeds.

Here Here for positive pittie encounters!!!

You know, I always thought "I could never own a pit" because I thought they'd just be too much dog for me. (Coming from a background in Dobes, even.)  But now I live w/my boyfriend's pit and she is a DOLL.  Wiggly and pushy and silly and goofy.  She would turn herself inside out to make you happy with her.

Good girl Lexi for being a good breed ambassador!  Cheers to the new owner for helping her find her BEST self!

The people who tie their Pit to a pile of bricks are probably training for weight pull.  However, they still sound like scum. It is nice to see the GOOD stories out there!  Gypsy and her family thank you!

Great story!  I'm glad to hear you had such a nice encounter.  I'm a big fan of pit bulls myself.  Smile  And I've gotta say, the name "sexy Lexi" made me grin.  I would like to meet her myself (and the guy too).  LOL.

I have only had two close encounters with pitties.  The first one happened many years ago.  One of my co-workers bred pits, he was kind of a rough around the edges person and I had a pre-conceived idea of what his dogs were like.  One day his wife brought something up to our shop and she had one of the dogs with her.  This was the sweetest, smartest dog I had ever met of any breed.  This dog knew more tricks than I can remember and was incredibly well behaved. I fell in love with this dog!  For many years that was my only close encounter with a pit and if I had not been heavily involved in retrievers I would have gotten one in a heartbeat.

A few years ago I had a terrible encounter with a pit who had a choke hold on another dog's throat.  The pit had broken though a  fence to get to this dog. The owner of the dog being attacked was terrified and would not come out of her house, she was screaming for help. I didn't want to try and pull this dog off and get attacked.  I was running back to my house to call the police when the pit's owner came running up.  It took that grown man 10 agonizing minutes to get this dog to release his hold using a special stick.  Turns out these were people in our suburban neighborhood raising fighting dogs!  The police showed up and arrested this man and several dogs were picked up by Animal Control.  The dog that was attacked did survive.  It was truly terrifying to watch BUT I never blamed the dog.  In fact I was sick thinking about what a wonderful breed this was and how insane it is for people to use them for such a horrible form of "entertainment".  I'm sure these people are still doing their thing somewhere else.
