    More bad Promeris info

This was emailed through our local dog egroup. I know the source and it is true:

First, a message from my dad:

Friday on our way out of town we stopped at our vets office to pick up some Frontline for the boys so we would have a safe weekend camping with them. Our vet informed us he was now using a new product called Promeris which was a better product and gave more protection. Saturday morning first thing we applied the promeris to all three boys (between the shoulder blades, not orally). Problems began shortly after that. Tyler began to vomit, Teak vomited, Trav seemed to be okay at the time. By the time Kelly got there in the afternoon, all 3 were lethargic, Tyler had vomited a few time, Teak twice, Trav didn't vomit, but was lethargic and as the weekend progressed became more non responsive to us when called. All three became somewhat disoriented about their surroundings, such as they have never had a problem in the trailer knowing the spot where their food dishes were, and they couldn't figure out which dish was theirs, they couldn't tell which direction to head when they were called, and just wanted to sleep. Tyler was dehydrated by the time Kelly got there. None of them ate more than 1 bowl of food the entire weekend, and Teak never had a bowel movement from friday until today which is very unlike him, Tyler had problems with going all weekend also. Even though they didn't eat normal meals, we kept giving them stuff to keep their strength up so they did have food in their stomachs to pass. All they wanted to do all weekend is sleep, none of them wanted to go for walks, and they live for walks, they turned away from water and foods that they normally devoure, brats, and other camping foods. By the time Kelly got there we ended up giving Tyler a shower to try and wash some of the promaris off because he was the worst one, by sunday we did the same with Teak and Trav. The smell it left on them was also overwelming, and our trailer reaked of the smell by Sunday morning.

Our guys had very horrible experiances with promeris and turned a weekend that they always have a blast at into a nasty weekend for all of us. Our guys will NEVER EVER use promeris again, and I would be very careful before you try it on any of your best friends. Traverse, Teak and Tyler

    And then my additional comments:
Yup, When I got to the campground Saturday afternoon I could tell Ty especially did not look right. He didnt have anything swollen, but his lips were tacky and pale, he was dehydrated (did the skin pinch test and it really stayed pinched), his ears were not bright red, but pale... I could smell the nauseating solution on him and it made his fur **nasty** ... I tried to get him to drink G2 (new formulation of gatoraide with less sugars), but he refused, so I rubbed some on his gums, and we did get him to drink some regular water and eat some ice cubes. We washed the solution off of him...

Teak, who usually gets REALLY excited to see me and Derrick just laid down, barely even looked up at us. The only time he actually approached me was about 1 minute before he vomited, and I think he was coming to me for comfort.

We had to really encourage all three boys to go for a walk, which like my dad said, is unusual... They hardly barked all the time I was there, also unusual as they barked anytime someone walked past the "dog tent" previous years... Their eyes looked glazed over, all of them...

So stay away from Promeris with herding breeds is my advice...

PS Feel free to cross post if it provides another owner with information they may have never seen before and "saves" a dog (& human!) from experiencing these horrid effects.

This happens when the pet ingests the promeris. The product must be placed high on the shoulder blades, where the pet cannot lick it. If two pets like to groom eachother, the must be kept seperate until the product is dry. This same type of reaction can happen with any flea prevention. I'm in no way an advocate for promeris, I will never use it on my animals.

In a conversation with a rep from promeris - she told me that the product is NOT safe to be touched by another animal, or human, until you can no longer smell it. She said that was why the sent was so strong, so you would know when it was safe.

Nothing against you but that sounds like a "line" to counter all of the bad press about the smell.

*shrugs* that's just what a rep told me. But if something is that toxic that it has to smell really bad so you wont touch it - I would never even concider putting it on my pets.

AMEN to that.  When I first read about that one ingredient and not touching your dog for several days I thought "WHY THE H*** WOULD ANYONE USE THIS CRAP ON THIER DOG IF IT IS THAT DANGEROUS."   But then I expect something like this--and half truths--from Fort Dodge.  My vet is not carrying this junk.  He is carrying the flea only tablet,Comfortis, put out by Lilly and so far I have found nothing bad about it.I would not touch this ProMeris with a 20 foot pole much less use it.

I doubt it's connected to just 'herding' breeds -- altho various breeds will have differing skin sensitivity and how 'porous' the skin is -- but that's pretty much down the line with how a dog reacts if they ingest amitraz OR, if for some reason, it sinks into the skin deeply and gets into the bloodstream.

I don't have a clue how the other drug affects the distribution of the amitraz.  But I can promise you that the dog doesn't need to 'ingest' it to react -- it's simply a stronger and potentially worse reaction if they lick it.

    • Puppy

Three weeks ago i adopted a 2 year old husky/shepherd mix from a shelter. I took him to the vet and he checked out healthy. I bought both heart worm and flea and tick medication from the vet. He recommended i use promeris for fleas and ticks. So yesterday i finally get to putting it on my puppy.

I didn't really read much on it before applying. I did a quick search on google and on the main website for the product everything seemed good. Well i applied it to chaz where he deff could not get to it to ingest it. Plus i have been with him the entire time since i applied it. This morning he just seemed off. He seemed very lethargic and was tired after a block during our usual 1-2 mile run. I get back home we go back to my room and he just wants to sleep. Eventually he wakes up and throws up. And hes back asleep again. Now hes walking around like hes drunk and just laying there.

So i go and research this product more, it seems many people have experienced the same things. It causes dogs to be lethargic, vomit, and some even salivate. I will never use this product again. Hopefully my poor puppy recovers soon and is back to his usual active self.

Also does anyone who has used this product know how long will my dog be like this for? Honestly i just feel pissed that the vet gave me this product. Does anyone know if vets get kickbacks for selling this stuff since its only sold at vets?

    Thanks
    Mike

Well, naturally, the vet will make a profit off the product sold in their clinic - all vets do on all products they sell. Promeris is cheaper to buy from the rep than the other products.

I would take your dog to the vet ASAP, however. The signs she are showing could only be the start of some more very serious problems. I definetly feel a vet visit is in order, NOW.
