Weird 888 number keeps calling me

So, for months this number that starts with 888 has been calling my house. Today the same number called my cell phone literally 9 times! And I NEVER gave my cell number to anyone besides friends and family. I do not put my cell number down for work, or credit cards, or car loans- ever. Everytime I answer they hang up. What should I do? Any guesses as to who it is?

    We had this problem too...
Go to 800notes.com and that will show you some information about who the company is and what the scam is...

My hubby hates these calls and will call the company and tell them to stop calling...

    Hope you find some info...

I think I would google the number and see what comes up.

    Look at this

This company calls continously. When I pick up the phone and say hello...I do not hear anything.  I have said Hello 3 or 4 times each time and still nothing.  So, I decided to call this number back and find out who it is and ask them to stop calling my home number.
At first I got a message saying this call would be recorded.  The a female operator came on the line and I asked what company this was and told them I was on the National Do not call list.  She said, oh that wouldn't be us. I asked again who this was and she said, " This is Alliance One." Or could be alliance1. I've never heard of this company before, however, they ring my phone off the hook all day long even on the weekends.  I repeated my number to her and asked her to remove me from her list.  She asked what my address was and I would not give that to her.  Told her to quit calling my number.

It sounds to me like some kind of scam. They bug you night and day and then you finally call them back and they try to get info from you. I would NEVER again answer the phone if they call.

I don't have my own phone, my cell is work issued and thus used for work related calls.  I don't answer any call I don't recognize/expect.  Often I get scam calls.  I Google the number and usually it comes up online.  I've also been getting calls for a guy named "Greg" who apparently applied for a job and gave my phone number.  Too bad, they wanted to offer him the job!

The number came up as a collection agency, but I do not have any overdue accounts....Hmm

If it's somebody that actually wants to talk to you, shouldn't they have the good sense to leave a message? At home I've gotten so I always check the caller ID before I answer the phone - if it's 888 or 800 or some similar area code, or if it just gives a city & state and I know I don't know anyone there, I don't answer it.  After it finishes ringing I check for messages but "surprise surprise" - there never is one. I think right now a lot of  these phone calls are political calls looking for donations and unfortunately, there's quite a while to go before those stop. Sad If they don't leave you a message, don't worry about it. And if they do, there's no law that says you have to call them back.

Nope, they've never left a message. When I do answer there's nobody on the other line. Ohhh well!

are they calling your cell?  check your bills closely - I wonder if there's some way to hi-jack your number and use it for own outbound calls.

I hate the one that wants to tell you about warranties expiring on your car or whatever - total scam!!!

I'd just call the cell company and block the number. You may want to get ahold of your credit report and make sure there isn't something on there you don't know about as well.

Excellent idea!  And if you have a checkbook or a box of checks stashed somewhere, go through them and make sure there aren't any checks missing.  Sometimes you don't find out about these things until it's almost too late to do anything about it.

I will defiantly call my bank and request a credit report. About a month ago (when the calls started) Jeremy's credit card and debit card were stolen out of his wallet at work. He cancelled both, filled out a police report, and put a faud alert on both cards. The detective never caught the man who used the cards twice for gas a cigarretes (before they were cancelled, Jeremy didn't discover them missing until late in the afternoon)...Sad...I'm hoping that had nothing to do with these calls, what a mess that would be. My name wasn't on the credit card or debit, and the calls are on my cell phone, and we both have the same home phone since we live together.

When I do answer there's nobody on the other line.

Give them 15-20 seconds to respond to you.  If it is a machine dialing setup, then after you answer, the machine may have to beep for someone to pick up the phone on their end.

You don't even have to do that.  By law, you are allowed a free copy of each of your three credit reports once per year.  Here is the website where you can get them: www.annualcreditreport.com.  This IS legit, so it's okay for you to enter your social.  NOTE: You will not get your credit score for free, but you will be able to download or print your reports, so you can check them for oddities.

If you suspect possible fraud, its a good idea to go ahead and get all three reports...something may show up on Experian that doesn't on TransUnion, etc.  Also, don't be fooled by freecreditreport.com and their catchy commercials.  It's a ploy from Experian to try and get you to sign up for some protection plan or something along those lines.

I got 2 weird calls today from phone # 401-401-0401 (weird number??)  They hang up when the kids answer. I called it back and a recording says that number is not in service please check the number and try again, sounds like some kind of spam.
