    rwbeagles-New A/C is in

took them all day yesterday but now our new Trane A/C is hooked up and hopefully ready to give us many years of faithful service. Our previous system was about 17 years old (compressor) the inside unit? who knows..older than that. It was pooping out even with the hard start kit they put on last year, beyond time.

SO we sucked it up and paid the man to come put it in. The estimate process was interesting to say the least. Sears and Home Depot were obviously selling a/c units made of platinum...haha! they were about $5-8k HIGHER than the other co's that just did a/c. We're happy with the deal we got...and if the gas lease money comes thru we'll even have gotten it for about nothing LOL.

Hopefully our ridiculous bills in winter for heat will come down some...they were higher than the a/c bill in summer...and we had a heat pump!

I've been having AC problems too, but all I needed was a new thermostat installed on the wall .... thank doG.

You'll be happy with the Trane - it is an excellent product!  Besides, they service their own.  You won't be stuck with Joe Schmoe subcontractor hired by the Big Box stores to service the unit who is barely qualified to fix a toaster.

I think Sears is highly overrated.  I've had several bad experiences with them over the years and will drive 100 miles out of my way to avoid them if I have to.

Whew, just in the nick of time.  The sweaty weather is already upon us.

Okay, I have to point something out, and not in a mean way because frankly I think it's funny.  You're so posting topics here just to use some of our less used icons huh?!  The movie reel, the coffee cup, now the island...

Hmmph...hardly my fault if some here aren't as inclined to be creative LOL.

    Congrats, Gina.

I do a lot of my own work because of trade experience. So, about a month ago, I got into the central unit, again, and cleaned off the evaporator coils. My old A/C can still knock down 30 degrees. So, along with your new compressor unit, see if you can get a once or twice a year maintenance contract where the guy comes in and cleans the central unit. This would include cleaning both sides of the evaporator coils, cleaning the squirrel cage (rotary blade cylinder that looks like the running wheel in a hamster cage). And of course, change your filters once a month if you can.

Thanks Ron...we got a 4" filter so we are changing that once every 8mos or so.

I think last year, within the same week, your A/C and my A/C both went out.  Somehow they made yours work but mine took a week to get fully replaced.  I am really happy that the warranty company replaced it, but it sucked working at home for a week waiting on A/C men in Texas July heat and not having any A/C.  We have a 3 phase unit which I guess are not as common so we had a few unneeded people come out b/c they had no idea what they were dealing with.  The electric guy is the one who actually told me it was 3 phase and I needed a new unit and I stuck to it after that.  Since we had a home warranty it only cost me $300 but we had no say in which one we got.  Ours is far more efficient though now than the ancient one we had out there.  Just be glad you replaced it now and aren't stuck for a week with no A/C.  It was absolutley miserable.

That reminds me, I need to have mine serviced.  Ah, the joys of home ownership.

well we had an AHS warranty...which would NOT pay to have the old unit cleaned...which would have cost $400-500 alone...then the actual warranty would need to be renewed in July...which would be $500....

Add to that...the inconvenience factor of because of the refused cleaning....the a/c completely dying and then waiting for AHS to send someone out...then the estimate....then the decision on whether to replace (which they may well might not have done since we did not have the unit cleaned on our dime...even tho they told us to)...then me being home all day with Cleo and a 4y/o in the house....both of whom do NOT tolerate heat well...

    Yeah....needed to be done. LOL.
