What size crates...

    What size crates...

Do you have, and how big (height at withers and weight) are the dogs?

I'm buying Cherokee a wire crate, but I can't decide whether to get a 36" or 42". She's 21" tall and 60ish pounds. She's really not going to be crated ever, except maybe while camping (because she really hates one of the dogs we go camping with, and isn't terribly fond of the other) or otherwise traveling, so it'll basically just be a bed/den.

She has a really flimsy "pop up" crate right now, and it's 36" x 22" x 22", and really, I think it's a fine size except for height (when there's any kind of padding in it, her back touches the top..and forget her head..), so it seems like a 36" crate would be great, but I've only ever closed her in the pop up crate once, and I definitely wouldn't leave her in there for more than a few minutes, so while I know a 36" wire crate will be both wider and taller than the pop up crate, I'm unsure about the size for actually crating her... But then 42" is pretty big... She often curls up in the back of her pop-up crate, and seems rather comfy, so I'm afraid the 42" will be too big for her.. Plus pads, beds, and covers to fit a 42" are a lot pricier than to fit a 36"...

    So anywho..what do you have?

I've got a 36" for Casey...and he's 13 lbs lol. It's fit every dog that I've brought home though, from a lab/dane mix to a bull terrier, to the pups. If she likes to curl up in a small space, I'd stick with the 36".

Bugsy is between 28-29", with a longish neck and 105lbs and his crate is the 48" ( I believe).  We still use the 42" as his travel crate as the 48" isn't very portable.  Since you are using it for travel I would definitely go for the 36"

Lex's crate is 28" high, 25" wide and 41" in diameter. He is 50lbs and 2 or 3 of him could fit in there. When in doubt I would just get the bigger one, its better to be a little big than too small. Lex prefers to curl up in the back of his too, and sometimes he just stretches out.

Dublin has the biggest crate they make.  It is the great dane sized one.  He is tall and long legged and I got it when he was only 5 months old knowing that a dog shouldn't hunch over at the neck in a crate.  I know they should be laying down but if crated a few hours I thought he should be able to stand and turn around in it.  I have his bed and pillow on one end with just a little bit of bareness showing.  It worked great but it is BIG!

Lillie's crate is 42L 28W 30H.  She can stretch out or curl up in it just fine.  But I wish it was a little higher.  In a couple weeks I will be getting her the great dane sized one because of the height issue I have with the one she has now.  And I will be converting the crate she is in now into a fun new home for Tico the bunny.

If it's for a fully grown housetrained dog I use the absolutely biggest crate I can FIT in the space in the room -- I have a dane-sized crate that Luna stays in and one just one size down from it that Billy uses.  Kee has a crate that's for a dog about 50 pounds.  That way everbuddy can S-t-r-e-t-c-h out as far as they need, they can get away from a mess if they are sick ... better too big than too little if it's an adult dog who may need to spend extra time in there at some point.  My dogs don't sleep in their crates at night but they're open if they want to.

See, Cherokee will basically use it JUST for sleeping in..and with the door open (or even off, if it comes off..). I just figure it'll come in handy for traveling too, but who knows, I might decide it's too much of a pain to take, and use her pop-up one still anyway...

I was also thinking though maybe I could use it for when new people come over...she'd be able to see and hear them, but feel "safe", and not be able to get to them...but I think either size would be fine for that...not like I'll ever be leaving her in it for hours.

Ohhh I can't decide... Maybe I'll find a 42" in a store to look at..see if it's ridiculously big... Cherokee's not really a go-to-the-store-and-test-it kind of dog, but just seeing it myself might help.. I dunno..

For traveling I err on the side of smaller because I don't want the dog sliding around in the crate, especially if I have to stop suddenly or, heaven forbid, I ever get in an accident. They don't really need to stand fully for travel or sleep honestly.

Maggie's regular crate is 36" and she's 19" at the shoulder; she rides in a 30" crate.  Z is 16/17" at the shoulder and uses a 36" crate for everyday, too.  Her traveling crate is  usually a 30" crate, sometimes sharing with Maggie for shorter trips.  She also fits in a 26" crate for short periods.

Kenya is 20/21, 58lbs and she uses a 36".  Coke is 25ish and uses a 42".  Coke actually prefers Kenya's crate and sleeps in there anytime she chooses to sleep somewhere else.

Oh, actually Cherokee's harnessed in the car...crate won't be for the car.

By "traveling", I mean like..camping and motels. If I had to leave her in a motel room by herself, I'd want her crated, not because she's destructive at ALL, but in case someone ignores the "no maid service" sign or something.. Cherokee's not much in the way of friendly. LOL.

And for camping, she and one of the dogs we go camping with don't do too well being near each other, so last time, one of them was in a car pretty much at all times, except for when we could keep them out of each other's sight, so Cherokee having a crate would be a very convenient thing... I'm hoping they're both better behaved next time, but who knows.

Oooh, good to know.. I was hoping you would chime in, cause I knew Kenya and Cherokee were pretty similar in size. Interesting that Coke prefers the smaller one too. Hmm.. Thanks.

Yep.  I've gotten flack for her crate size before, but all she does in there is sleep and eat.  The door is propped open and she goes in there to sleep.  Heck, sometimes her and Coke BOTH go in there!  Coke's crate is way bigger and he still goes in hers.  I don't see why they need extra room for sleep and travel.  Both of them have other favorite spots around the house that they also scrunch up in to sleep.  They don't see concerned with size.

Shiner is 20", though he's lighter at 38 lbs, and uses a 36" crate....I wish it were taller since he's leggy, but the 42" was only a tiny bit taller and absolutely huge for him length wise, and he will poop in it if it's too big. Since that's not an issue for you, I'd buy the bigger one. You can always swap it if it doesn't look right once she's in it.
