    adopting a new dog

I decided to adopt a dog from my local animal control.  I have always grown up with dogs and missed having one for so long because I was living in an apartment. I have been looking for last couple months for the 'perfect' dog.  I finally found one yesterday and she will be home in less than a week.  But the reason I am posting is because I wanted to share her sad story with everyone.  The lady at animal control told me that someone had literally thrown her out the window of their MOVING car.  The people behind them had seen what happened and got part of the license plate and thankfully stopped to pick this sweet girl up.  Her previous owners had not cared for at all. She has worms and fleas and is underweight.  But even after everything that has happened she is great. But she is afraid of men.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this with her? She lives with me and my roommate so there are no men in the house but I don't want her cowering every time she sees a man.

    Hi and welcome!!!

What a very sad story, how can people be such idiots and so cruel.  Blessings on you for giving this dog a home.

A problem such as fear of men, in my opinion, requires a bit of professional help from a behaviorist.  It can be solved, but involves many baby steps and must be done in such a way as to not futher harm the dog.  It's likely this dog was abused by a man, and to undo that damage will be some work.  One meeting with a behaviorist will give you the tools necessary to lead this little one ahead.
