    Do I, or don't I mention this?

I'm writing a cover letter for a job I am applying for at a local school for children with autism. The foundation that supports the school is named for the child of the parents who started it. I know this boy because I took TaeKwon-do with him for several years, though I have not gone for a while. I am doubtful that his mother would recognize me by name, but if she saw me, and knew that this is where I know her son from, I think she may remember who I am. I was told by another parent, whose child I do work with, that she said I worked well with her son. I think the answer is that I do mention this, in that it may give me some edge over the competition, but I thought I'd check and get some more opinions on this.

Don't mention it. Let it be a nice sidebar, if she remembers. Let the letter be about your qualifications and commitment to helping with autism.

I agree...don't make mention in the letter.  It will be a great bit of conversation when you get in for the interview.  You might be surprised in that she could recognize your name, you never know.  Smile

If working with the autistic child is relevant work experience for applying at this school, I would mention it, but not necessarily the relationship, just in terms of specific work experience.

Could you get a letter from the kid's mom and bring it to the interview?  DH used to coach gymnastics for austic and Down's Syndrome kids and a few parents offered to give him letters of recommendation.  Now, he is finishing a second degree in teaching special education, so he has the letters to take along on job interviews when he starts looking for schools (still has another semester of student teaching since they require two for his program).

I would list the taekwon-do school under hobbies on the reseme, that way she can discuss it at the interview if she chooses too

Of course be sure to mention Markie...it will go a long way....hehehehehe

Seriously, keep it simple, give your experience and what your desire is to work there...I know you'll do fine!!
