Wow - tough lesson regarding poisonous plants

My boss just told me this morning that his in-laws lost 2 lab puppies from eating a Daphne plant. They'd only had the pups about 2 weeks and had let them out back to play. Later, they both seemed very ill so they took them to the vet. The vet ran tests and said that their livers were failing and there wasn't anything that could be done, so they had to euthanize them. It wasn't until later that they realized that it was from the pups munching on this plant. I guess I never realized how truly toxic a plant could be but I'll certainly be checking before I add anything to my landscape.

A few Daphne berries can kill a child, so I wouldn't want those plants in my yard even if I didn't have pets.

My condolences to the couple who lost their pups.

What a shame -- between poisonous plants and plants that cause extreme skin reactions you really have to be careful.

There's a palm tree in Florida -- the Sago Palm -- it smells like chocolate to a dog and is nearly irresistible and it's deadly.  You rarely see them in landscaping any more - but it used to be extremely widespread.  At one point they even made mulch out of it and THAT was deadly.  *sigh*

Gosh that's tragic Cathy -- what a shame.

It's a good lesson for me and I thought I was pretty dog-savvy. A friend just gave me a beautiful potted tree fern. I had to move one of my indoor plants to make room for it and even though the plant I moved is no more or less accessible than it was before, suddenly Sassy seems interested in nibbling on it. I don't even know what the heck it is, but I'm going to find a higher place to put it.

Not to discount the heartbreak of losing these 2 pups, but they'd paid $500 for each of them. The medical treatment to save them added up to $3800.  When they called the breeder to let her know what happened, she felt awful for them and offered her last 2 pups to them for $400 each and they've got them now. So, not only was it very sad but also verrrrryyyy costly.

I hope that the couple realizes how hard they need to work

    • to prevent the pups from bonding more strongly to each other than to people and
    • to make each pup independent enough that neither freaks out if the other isn't close by (e.g. vet care).

A lot of breeders simply refuse to allow 2 pups from the same litter to go to the same home.

Oh man, I know and although no one asked my opinion, I did mention to my boss that getting 2 puppies was not a wise idea. They're also both in their 70s, so I see a lot of huge challenges ahead. I wished I'd known what they were planning because I really think I might've been able to talk them into going with a lab rescue. It's seriously frustrating to me that people are so set on a puppy and don't consider all that goes into caring for one (let alone two!!). Heck, Sassy was about 2 when we rescued her and she still hadn't outgrown all her puppy destruction Tongue Tied.

Gosh Cathy that is so sad and sort of startling that they immediately took on another two  LAB pups with such a bad experience and being in their 70's they have double the trouble ahead I wish them and the pups health safety and good times

How horribly sad.  Run free little puppies.

I volunteer to play the bad guy.  Why don't you print out a copy of my post for your boss to give to his in-laws?  That way you can just be passing on information.  Wink

The more I think about it, the madder I've gotten. Why would a breeder sell 2 puppies to a couple in their 70s? There's no other reason than greed. If the breeder really cared about these pups, he/she'd have explained what they could expect and refused for the benefit of everyone.

My other boss told me today that he had a 1 yr BD party for his puppy this weekend and gave her a pork bone to celebrate. I said "oh good, a raw bone?" and he said "no, BBQ'd", so I tried to educate him a little but everyone think's I'm the "over-the-top" dog lady Stick out tongue

I bet his vet would give him an earful about bones.
