Question about small dogs and barking

My neighbors have 2 small JRTs (siblings) and whenever they leave, the dogs sounding like they're killing each other. I'm guessing they're not actually attacking each other. I'm going to have to talk to them since they're now leaving their windows open and it's beyond annoying to listen to if I'm outside. Even if I'm inside, I have to close my doors and windows to block the sound.  Is it common for small dogs to act like that when left alone?

Probably depends on the type of dog more then the size of dog. Mine don't and they are the size of JRT's.

I think its depends on the individual dog rather then if its just small dogs. Terriers are fiesty things, love to talk all the time. If the dogs sound like they are fighting with each other then maybe you should tell the owners, they might not have a clue about it.

The neighbors know they do it cause I've heard them come home and yell at them to stop. They separate the larger dog (lab) in a separate room because I'm guessing he doesn't react well when they go nuts like that. My lab almost tears down the fence when they do it in the backyard, so we make sure to bring her in when they let the little dogs out. I guess I'd just never heard that kind of sound before unless dogs were actually attacking, but maybe it is just a strange vocalization thing.

My SIL has a JRT and when you go to leave the house, she follows you to the door and as soon as you open it to leave, she goes nutso like that and jumps up and bites the mini-blinds and sounds totally freaked out. Once you're out the door and a few steps away, she stops though.

It is not small dogs, it is the breed and owners. I have only had poodles, Cockers and now my Shih Tzu. All quiet.

Terriers need lots and lots of exercise. They have lots of energy. My guess is that those dogs are bored.

Is there any way you could put a small recorder out in your yard for about an hour?  They probably have no idea what this sounds like from your side of the fence. Or maybe invite them over for snacks and let them listen for themselves.

I've been thinking the same thing. These barking episodes happened 7 or 8 times over the weekend and some lasted for over 30 min's. I think I can just ask them to leave their house and come over to my backyard and they'll get a full appreciation. I don't enjoy listening to dogs bark in general, but this is worse than anything I've ever heard. I honestly can't believe that they're not hurting each other or destroying anything in all the chaos.

I year ago I was on the other side of the fence (LOL).  The police came to my door and told me that a neighbor complained about my "small" dog barking all day.  This was a bit of an exageration since he was not left "all day" at all.

He was lonely, had a bit of SA and was crated without the other dog (that was the fix in the end, neighboring crates).  I left my windows open and so his barking and whining really carried.  Here is the thing - I didn't know there was a problem until the very nice police officer was telling me.  If my neighbors had told me I could have started finding solutions much earlier.

Talk to your neighbors, let them know how often it occurs and that it isn't just when they are coming and going.  Approach it with a "dog's best interest" position and it'll work out.

I hope those two aren't hurting each other!

I totally agree and would never call the police on anyone or even AC (unless the people were the type you couldn't approach). I just hate to complain, but I also hate the idea of a long summer listening to it. Assuming the dogs aren't hurting each other, I just think they need to close the windows when they leave and that'll take care of the problem. It's only been since the weather got nice that I've noticed it. DH actually thought they were leaving them outside cause it sounds so close (gotta love Calif homes built so close together Sad).
