Here I go, talking about my hare...

Didn't think there was much need to put my screen name in the subject there....

So it's a week today since Kit the hare (along with Penny and Bonnie) moved into the new house. I've missed them all so badly. I've been in seventh heaven having them all back with me. Penny showed me just how awful liver treat induced liquid poop is in shagpile carpet (nice work, Mum, let her find and eat half a bag of liver treats then offload her so I have to deal with the mess). Bonnie displayed a hitherto unseen side of her personality, dashing back and forth across the carpet and making sneak attacks on things from underneath the coffee table. And Kit....

It took him a couple of days to actually move. He spent the weekend huddled in a corner staring into space. I could get him to move if I poked him a bit, but mostly he was unresponsive zombiehare. I was a bit worried, but then he slowly came out of his shell-shocked state. I let him out for a run, which was really good for him and brought him out more. Just enough to have him running up and down his cage at 3 in the morning. Took that as a good sign and let him out again. That combined with feeding him raisins burried in hay when we go to bed and giving him a sheet to munch on seems to have settled him down so that we can at least sleep again. Nocturnal animals make cruddy pets.

So he's doing all right, now. He's discovered the joy of adjoining rooms and being able to dive into his cage from either direction. He's been learning about the house and where things are and letting me pat him again. He's even out tonight even though my partner has come home. That's the first time this week he hasn't gone and hid as soon as the boy got home. He's a special needs little guy, which just makes him that much more rewarding when you see he's happy.

Here's to hoping Kivi Tarro and Kit get along. I've been trying to get an enclosure built for the rabbits, but the last quote I got was nearly 4 grand, so it's back to the drawing board. Slow work. And the pool fence is slow as well. I'm always kinda relieved to come home to a dog that hasn't drowned herself. She's quite nimble around the pool, though, and can run through in the dark very comfortably despite failing eyesight and increased clumsiness. I'll be happy when the fence finally goes up, though.

I'm glad Kit is feeling better!  It sounds like he just needed time, and hopefully he'll continue to improve as he settles in.  It's always amazing to me how different rabbits (or hares) can be when entering new environments.  Dubby and Max remind me of your two.  Max is usually slow to settle in, being very quiet and cautious.  But Dubby's my wild child, bouncing around and investigating.  I'm hoping that they adjust well when I move next month!

Max and Dubby are so cute. I love them! Smile

Bonnie has settled in really well. I think she was just glad to be back with us where she could demand mountains of fresh greens and constant headstrokes. She doesn't much like being outside all on her own (except for Penny), though. I think she'd rather be with Kit inside. Kit will go out eventually, just not until we have the enclosure sorted out. I don't really want him free to flip out and jump fences on his way from his cage to the house and back.

I think they tend to settle better if they have a friend, or if you can keep as many things in their old routine as possible. Kit always used to settle better when I moved him if I was there as well as Penny. He seemed to think the new surroundings were fit for curious exploration provided those in it were familiar to him. This time round he's coming from 2 years with my mother and limited time in that 2 years with me and Penny. He found it all a bit threatening. I'm glad Bonnie is so much easier than he is.
