"But it's against the LAW!"

i'm rather anti-cell phone..... i only carry one when out and about just to make my mom shut up.

I consider a cell phone an important piece of equipment when out and about (with or without a dog).  I want to be able to call for help if I am harassed by humans or dogs.  Or if my car breaks down.  Or if I witness an accident.  Etc., etc.

I certainly want to be able to get help if my dog is hurt!!

I understand your view of cell phones.  I only use my cell phone for urgent calls and when out-of-town - very seldom for just chatting.

I don't feel that I need to be instantly available to everyone who wants to talk to me.  However, I want to know if my family needs me and I don't want to have to hunt for a phone when I really need one.

I was just going to say that.  Besides, the number of times I've found a dog and been able to call the owner right there on my mobile because the number has been on the tag.  Otherwise I'd have had to take the critter home, or if I didn't have a spare lead, just let it go and hope it didn't come to any harm.

To the OP - you need to check if it IS against the law for your dog to be loose.  I can't imagine that it would be if you are on private property, but CHECK.

In any case, you could reply to her that the law requires the dog to be under control when in a public place, so she needs to sort her own house out before she has a go at you.  (you might want to check that as well, but hey, it sounds true and it probably is.... Big Smile)

Neighbors:  Can't live with'em.  Can't shoot'em.  Because its against the law.

I'm just kidding folks.  But, dang'it, why do people have dogs, then don't have the brains to learn how to control them.  I just don't get it.

If only you could - my neighbors would be long gone!

I just got back from walking my dog, off lead, while talking on a cell phone. Of course, my dog is totally reliable, I don't mind interrupting a conversation for a command, and we were on private property.

Seriously, if *I* can control a large dog enough to bathe it, trim it's toenails, and trim it's hair without injuring it.... anybody can walk one. It's not that hard to keep a dog under 100 lbs from dragging you. And, even if it was, there are *so* many anti pulling devices out there.... invest in one!

Well...I don't really know if there are any laws going against an untrained dog pulling his owner by the leash, as he is still on a leash.  Technically that is not against the law.  Unfortunately, this is not beneficial at all for pedestrians and owners with controlled pets.

I'm a little upset about one young lady, who is being pulled around by her large, aggressive dog as she walks her dog with one hand and the other hand always holds her cell-phone.

Sounds like one for the idiot police!

Exactly what I was thinking.  She should at LEAST leave the cell in her pocket.  It sounds to me as though perhaps both hands on the leash might help a little.

ALWAYS and I do Mean ALWAYS make sure you are living to the letter of the law. IF you are required to have your dog on a leash in public than do it. Even if it is the world's best most reliable dog have a lead on the dog.  PERIOD.  You can make it a really long drag line so you are barely following the concept and allowing your furkid as much freedom as possible but do not allow this small minded moron a chance to cause you problems. The Courts are not going to allow you to show up and put himn thru his paces so they can say "Yep that is one great dog!" the law says leash? then do it.    keep in mind that cell phone she is carrying can get a squad car there  faster than you can grab a leash, it also takes pictures ... please do not risk your wonderful boy because this person has issues. There is more to protecting our furkids than medical care, diet and training... sometimes we must deal with laws that make little sense.

that's why I think our communities law is far superior to pointless leash laws- the law states the dog must be under the owner's immediate control. Leash is not mentioned. Not that that stops people from letting their dogs run amuck at the end of a 26-foot flexi; but these people are breaking the law in our area, but not in most areas, and could in theory get in trouble if anyone bothered to report them.
