Help..Cat hiding in my car engine

My neighbor brought home a little kitty a couple days ago cuz it was a stray at the school she works at.  He got beat up by a tomcat I guess so she decided to bring him home.  Well, she leaves the little guy in her backyard and I found him in our SUV engine compartment.  I was gonna take the dogs to the trails when I heard him meowing.  Good thing I didn't start the car.   I came to work, and later when my husband got home the neighbor came over and lured the cat out.  Today...repeat of yesterday except I called my DH to tell him the cat was in the engine again and thank goodness he meowed before I started the car.  He said when he left for work this morning, the neighbor was outside calling the cat and he heard it meowing in his engine compartment.  I lured the cat out today only to find this cat in poor shape.  In my opinion poor shape.  He had dirty ears or ear mites, his back leg and a good little cut on it and his front leg had open wounds and he is limping.   I called my husband back fearing that the cat might have been attacked by a dog or worse yet....our dogs!  He said no, that was from the fight with the tomcat days ago.

Now, I love my neighbors...we all get along great but I hardly see her because she works til 4pm and I go to work at 2pm.  I see and talk to her husband almost everyday.  I will talk to him tomorrow but I know he doesn't want or like the cat.  I think the cat needs to see a vet and i also think they need to do something with the car before it gets killed.  I don't want to start the car one day and be responsible if I hurt the kitty.   How does one say this to a neighbor?

Just get a bucket of water and pour it in in there before starting your car. It dosnt hurt your car or the cat but they hate it and he'll learn real fast.......unless you get a freak cat who likes water, LOL

This is a perfect example of why I thud the hood of my car before I get in whenever it has been parked outside.  Especially in colder weather as cats will curl up in the nice warm engine.

I'm sooo glad you heard the meows before you started the engine!

Don't know what to tell you about approaching your neighbor though...  Sad

Cats aren't the only critters that will climb onto your engine---I've banged a  few hoods in my time. LOL. My father in law started a car with a cat under his hood---the tip of the cat's tail was severed :( but it survived. He said the noise was terrifying.

The cat should be less likely to climb in there if it is warm out---unless it is hiding from something. You could always blow the horn a good FIVE or SIX times before you start your car. Then inform the neighbors you are blowing the horn so much because of their cat.Devil

We didn't have a cat, but a squirrel making a home out of my truck.  Opened the hood one day after it had been parked for a couple of days, and the wonderful surprise was a pile of acorns just sitting there.  We definately make quite the racket when getting in the vehicles now
