What he knew that other singers eventually learned is that singing is story telling and you have to build tension and release it.
Absolutely true -- one of our favorites to go hear is Arlo Guthrie (and believe it or not the old hippie still tours with HIS KIDS -- of all of those at Woodstock, who'd have thot Arlo would be the one big family man with all the family/extended family all into music and all singing together for fun). He is still such an awesome storyteller -- he does a lot of his Dad's music (Woody Guthrie) and he ranges from bluegrass to classical (and in a lot of his music the Celtic influence is SO strong - but then they favor a lot of Appalachian instruments like dulcimers, etc. that descended from Scots/Irish roots).
Annoying voice -- maybe, but again, like Ron said - his ability as a storyteller thru music is what holds it all together and takes it from annoying to mesmerizing. "City of New Orleans" still brings me to tears - my Grandpa worked the railroads for many years and it takes me right back there.
