    Argh! Darn nerves...

I am flying home for a friend's wedding tomorrow and have been fine until now, but all of a sudden I'm feeling very nervous.  I've flown many times before, but the last time I had a panic attack while they were deicing the plane, which was not fun to say the least.  Anyone with ideas of what I can do to lessen this feeling?  I'm prob going to take some Rescue Remedy tonight, but I don't think it will fit in the darn clear baggie for the trip.

If this is a pattern that's starting you can bet I'll be looking into getting the appropriate documentation for an Emotional Assistance Animal - I think part of the reason I'm kinda freaking now instead of tomorrow is that both girls are already at the kennel so I'm by myself here and not looking forward to sleeping tonight.  How pathetic is that?! *sigh*

No tips, but I hope you have a great trip and have fun at the wedding....

    Vodka - lots of it!!!

Seriously though, you should visit your doctor and ask him/her to prescribe something for the plane ride.

Hope you have fun at the wedding!

BF gets like that, and for whatever reason REFUSES to take meds for it... I've found a combination of distracting him with videogames (hooray for the Nintendo DS) and distracting him with... other things... (a few words whispered in his ear usually does the trick) and he does much, much better. Are you going with your fiance?

I actually like take-off and landing, but if it's a long flight, I take a full or double dose of Dramamine (aka Gravol) and it puts me right to sleep.

my mom's the same way. She takes Dramamine (sp?) before EVERY flight - and she's fine.

We fly a lot, and that's really the only thing that works for her.

Benedryl might work too - makes ya sleepy.

I'm not afraid of flying but I do tend to get antsy or nervous before a trip. There's usually so much going on that I just start spinning (what if I miss the plane? What if there's a problem with the connection?....etc.) and that just creates a bunch of anxiety. I think it's pretty normal and just because you had a panic attack one time doesn't mean you will again, so try not to dwell on that. Getting something from your Dr. to take just in case or to make the trip more relaxed is a great idea too and I'm sure they'd understand.

Hylands "Calms Forte" and Valerian root -- you *can* take together and neither will make you so you can't function.  Calms Forte is a small bottle you can carry in your purse and Valerian is either a capsule or tincture - whatever works for you.  The valerian you can take 2-3 caps every 6 hours with no problem at all.  The Calms you can take 2 as needed -- may help you sleep, but it won't zone you.

I hope you have a great time at the wedding and just getting away.  I know how hard it is to sleep without your pups not being there.  I had to take mine to the kennel the day before I left vacation, I was hardly able to sleep at all.   You will have a great reunion with them when you get back.  Have lots of fun!!

So I'm back from the trip and all went well for the most part.  No panic attacks, just some mild nerves every once in a while.  The wedding was nice, I got a lot accomplished and my dogs were very happy to see me today when I picked them up at the kennel.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone.  I'm going to try to remember to bring my rescue remedy tabs or Calms Forte in the future as I know RR works and I've used Calms in the past.  I don't want to mess with drugs because I don't use them much in general and hate the feeling I get when I do take them.

Ativan 0.5 mg sublingual ;) Ask your doctor for it, most people I know who have the same problem swear by it, but just remember you can't drive. Ativan is a benzo that affects the same receptors in your brain as alcohol, it's like a martini in a disolveable pill. Just keep it in mind in case you change your mind about meds.

yea but what does it do?!  I'm not going to take *anything* that drugs me up, makes me feel groggy or "just don't care", etc. and/or has nasty side effects.  The immediate jump to meds seems a bit crazy to me.

Did going to the wedding get you excited for yours?? Big Smile

    • Gold Top Dog

     Yup! Big Smile

Of course it also made me miss my fiance horribly - only a few more weeks of long distance stuff, though!!!!!!!!!

    • Gold Top Dog

I'm excited for you, too! Wink
