Dakota's recent trip to the vet

Dakota's recent trip to the vet

So, some people were interested in the new vet that I took Dakota to today. This vet specializes in geriatric dogs and nutrition. I was skeptical about the nutrition part but wow, was I impressed! First off, every appt is 1 hr long - no rushing you in and out the door. It was nice and quiet in the office and had big exam rooms. Of course, all of this comes at a price of $42.50 per office visit but I think that it was worth it to have that 1 on 1 conversation time with the vet.

She looked over Dakota's records from her previous vet and we talked about what has been going on for almost a year now. Her conclusion is that it is not lymphoma like the other vet thought, but IBD instead. I was sooooo happy and relieved to hear that. I can deal with IBD but cancer....bleh. So anyway, the plan is to keep Dakota on Iams Low Residue for now. The problem with that is that Dakota pretty much refuses to eat it unless she's starving. So I'm adding a bit of canned low residue to entice her to eat. Her diet is going to be seriously restricted from now on - very few bland treats, no more Natural Balance food roll,  no high fat high flavored chewies, etc. The vet suggested that I take a can of the low residue, roll it out as if it's cookie dough and bake it and use that as treats. I thought that was an interesting idea.

Eventually, we might switch her to a Hills product with a protein that Dakota's never eaten before, we'll see. For right now I'm not playing with the idea of switching her food any time soon. I just need to keep coming up with ways to get her to eat it. Oh and she also needs to lose 6 lbs.

What impressed me the most was that as we were talking, I mentioned that at first I was treating Dakota's diarrhea with pumpkin to which she replied "that's my favorite go to treatment for diarrhea". She was really happy to hear that I tried it. (Thank you idoggers!)

Then we got to talking about Neiko's diet and his issue with not being able to keep weight on. She agreed that I should be feeding him Innova Evo! I was floored. To hear a vet actually recommend something like Innova Evo is practically unheard of. She said "That's the best food out there for dogs who are so active they can't keep weight on. I'd never recommend the food to a dog that needs to keep weight off though". So she really does know her nutrition! yay!

I asked about the green poo issue with Innova Evo and she said that as long as the poo is normal otherwise not to worry about it.

Anyway, back to Dakota. I found a new lump on Dakota so the vet checked that and it's just another fatty tumor. That dogs has fatty tumors on top of fatty tumors, I swear.

Also, in 2 months we are going to do a super duper full panel on her which test for something like 28 things including thyroid and all that. It's expensive but I think it'll be worth doing one time (maybe I still might change my mind on this). She'll be due for new blood work by then anyway.

I talked to the vet about my upcoming work trip where I'll need to either board Dakota (and the other dogs) or send them to a friends. Right now the plan is to send all 3 dogs to a friends house (nice friend, eh?). The vet really didn't like the idea at all for her. She thinks that the stress of boarding or sending her to a friends house will cause a flare up with her IBD. She would rather I have someone come stay at the house. I might do that but we'll see. It just depends on if I can get someone to do it or not. Either way, I got one of those pheramone (sp) collars for her to wear when I'm gone. That was $27 but if it works it'll be worth it's weight in gold. I almost think that I should get one for the other dogs too.

I think that's it...long wordy story, sorry! It was a great vet visit though and I'm so relieved to finally know the root of our problem.

Good for you!!!  And good for Dakota, too!!

    • Gold Top Dog

I've been eyeballing those pheremone collars. You'll have to let us know what you think.

That sounds like a fantastic vet visit! I'm glad you're getting some backup and good suggestions.

How do I find info on the collars???

That vet sounds great, does she have a practice in RI, LOL???  Just an FYI--baking the canned dog food makes the house smell like something died, just warning. . .

I sometimes freeze the canned in ice cube trays and give it to her that way.

Does Dakota like yogurt?  That helps too if she can handle the dairy stuff.

It sounds like she is very similar to Willow--Willow hates her special food too.

yeah I think that she is a lot like Willow with all of the food/stomach issues. Dakota can't do yogurt though, unfortunately. That's a good idea about the ice cube tray though. I will try that. The vet suggested I use the wet food in Dakota's kong in place of the NB I usually use. We also talked about home cooking but I laughed and said that I don't even cook for myself.

The pheromone stuff is called Dog Appeasing Pheromone Diffuser & Spray or D.A.P. I think that if you google DAP you will probably find info. The info they gave me has a website of www.vpl.com. The vet says that you can get it at pet stores, online or at vets. There's collars, plug in diffusers and spray on stuff. I'll let you all know how that works. The collar lasts 30 days, however it doesn't release pheromone's when wet (so the pamplet says). I'll put it on her in the beginning of May and have her wear it for the month.

The problem with homecooking anyway is that she would probably like that better and give you an even harder time when you went back to the dog food.  That's what I go thru with Willow, that's why she gets less homecooked than I'd like to give her--it's just too hard to get her back on dog food after it runs out.  And, I can't keep up with it all the time so I need that dog food option.

The bland treats Willow gets are baked meats like turkey breast cutlets cut up in small pieces, she likes the vanilla pretzels at the cookie bar in Petco too, very bland and she's never had an issue with them and they are low fat--nothing too junky in them either.

I also in the past had a recipe for canned i/d that you rolled it into little meatballs and microwaved a few minutes just to make them a little stiff and then rolled them in either meat or grated cheese, whatever the dog could handle--you might be able to do that with her food too. I can't do it with the z/d now different consistency. I used to make a bunch and put them in a container in the fridge and give as a snack in place of a cookie.

I'm happy for you and Dakota. I nice, well informed, caring vet is like a treasure! I think your dogs staying at home is the best thing to do... but sometimes it's difficult to find someone commited like ourselves. Good luck!

Great Appointment. Glad it went well.

Your comment about fatty tumors on fatty tumors made me smile. That was Shadow. I guess if they live long enough (Shadow was Dakota's age) that happens.

I recommend you do the blood work. Yes it is expensive, but it will tell you what you are dealing with and how to keep her going. I do know we discussed it with Shadow, we HIGHLY suspected lymphoma so I didn't want to know. We were convinced Shadow had Cushings, I wanted to do the minimum to keep her comfortable. If she couldn't be comfortable we would discuss options. She lived for 3 more years after dx.

I have friends who have hired the pet sitters who come in and care for you animals but not stay in the home. I had to have someone over night so that was not an option for us. Do you know a student who might be willing to stay at your house? That is what I look for but I have several options as we have UM students at the barn and college girls in the neighborhood.

I am so glad you found a vet you could talk with. Will you take Neiko and Lilly there too? Or is just for good old dogs.

Wow what a great vet!  I am glad that you might be able to solve Dakota's tummy troubles Smile

    • Gold Top Dog

It sounds like you found a really good vet! Yay for Dakota.

It's nice she actually recomended the evo. I like my vet, but she is one of those science diet all the way vets, and it really gets annoying.

Yay, so glad to hear about the great vet visit, and treatment plan!

I haven't decided if I'll take Neiko and Lily there yet or not. On one hand, several people from the agility club work there which is good, they are very good with nutrition and sports meds. On the other hand, they are in Okemos and I live on the SW side of Lansing so it's a tad bit of a drive. They also don't take Care Credit so if the dogs need anything major done in an emergency type situation I might be in trouble financially.

Fortunately, those 2 dogs seem pretty healthy and I really don't expect to have to take them to the vet much unless they get injured. I might look around for another vet closer to home for Neiko and Lily and just keep Dakota at this vet.
