    A doggy mystery

Why do dogs roll in dead things? I think that this is one of those doggy things that I'll never understand.

Well it is believed wolves roll on dead things so they can help mask their scent.  I think dogs do it cause it is like a doggy orgasm for the senses when it comes to smell.

I'm more simplistic -- besides I used to teach lower elementary.  It's like doggie version of "show and tell".  I came, I saw, I conquered, I ROLLED IN IT!!!  I found it first -- it's mine.  I possess it -- it's MINE.  I ROLLED IN IT -- It's MINE -- a part of me.  KNOW ME ... KNOW MY CONQUEST.

    RACE YA!!!!

I've never believed that one- I'm sure the deer would be just as terrified to have long-dead mice or reeking fox poop sneaking around upwind of them as wolves. Not to mention it doesn't take into account just how sensitive most animal's noses are- might fool a human with our pathetic sense of smell.

Why do people put on perfumes? cause they like the way it smells. That's why dogs roll in dead stuff. And fox poop.

I often thought it was like showing off....look at me guys....look what I killed!  And any of our dogs that did that knew that a bath was in their future.  In fact even Dublin who hates bathes didn't argue the point when he got home.  It's funny at the dog park if something is dead they all line up and take turns rolling in it.  I prefer when Dub is in the back of the line because the first few get the guts and feathers etc on them first.  Less smelly for the ride home.

Oh I watched a dog that rolled in something dead in the woods, it was the worse smell I've ever experienced. Two baths and Skunks Etc wash still didn't remove the stench, ugh!  Just thinking about it makes me gag.

I read somewhere that it was to disguise their scent also.  I don't know, sounds reasonable.  At the same time I could see it just smelling so delicious to them that they just can't help themselves.

I always thought they just liked the smell.  I call it "doggie perfume".  ~shrugs~
