puppys at petstores

the AKC actually has cracked down somewhat- which is why here in PA the amish now crank out weird mixes and "register" them with weird made-up registries. And lets not even get started on how the amish treat their horses...that would be quite a rant.

I own a self-service dog wash called the Dog-O-Mat and I get about one phone call a month from people who are looking for a puppy.  I got one last Saturday at around 7pm.  First they wanted to know what time we close, which is 9pm, then they asked if we sold puppies.  I gave them our standard line, that retail establishments are not allowed to sell puppies within the city limits of Ann Arbor and they should go to the humane society.  This man then asked where the closest store that sold puppies was.  I told him that I would not give him that information since I did not condone buying puppies from a pet store.

I wanted to scream, talk about  impulse purchase.  The guy decided at 7pm he NEEDED a puppy that night but he had no clue where to find one.  HMMM, that is a good idea, I will put a blurb on my website about not buying puppies from pet stores.

Thanks for that info about Ann Arbor.  When I was preparing my presentation, I could not find info on a locality that bans retail sale of dogs.  I'd like to find out what the history is in Ann Arbor and how they got the ban passed, because I'd really like to push/petition for it in my county.

Even if the AKC stopped registering these dogs (and they should!) there are so many crap registries cropping up (like the CKC which is Indie's registry) that will register ANYTHING and take the money for it.  There are registered "Cheeks" at my local pet store.  Gag me!  Ick!

What is a "Cheek"?  I'm sure I'm just gonna be *thrilled* about the answer....but curiousity gets the best of me.

Taking a guess.... chi x peke?

Until the AKC stops issuing papers for these Puppy Mill dogs this will continue. IMO

Absolutely.  If the AKC did not issue papers then the puppy mills would not be in business.  I think that breeders should provide proof of genetic testing before a litter is registered.  Otherwise, what is the purpose of the AKC guidelines for breeds if they don't have to be followed?

It's kind of interesting - in our town we had 3 good-sized pet stores where you could buy dogs. And then all of a sudden two of them have closed and we just have the one.  Those two pet stores only sold a few very small breed pups and some kittens.  Now we just have the large one and they sell a lot of animals with some big price tags: puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, etc.  It is also one of the main pet supply stores in the area so they get a lot of business.  I have never seen any 'big' dogs sold there - they sell the small purebreds and 'designer' mixes.  None of the staff know where the animals come from - you have to talk to the manager who says they come from 'reputable breeders'.  These 'designer' mixes (or fancy mutts, as my friend calls them) are selling for anywhere from $600 - $3000.  I have a male Standard Poodle that I take out-and-about with me sometimes, and we have stopped in there, mostly just for socialization purposes. I have had workers and customers there ask me if I am using him for breeding and how they'd like to see this or that breed mixed with him.  And my response is always to ask why.  Lots of intellegent, thoughtful answers: "oh, it would be so cute", "the colors would look so cool together", "Poodles are so smart and the don't shed so the puppies would be awesome" - to quote a few.  Yikes!  So you do what you can to educate people and steer them in the right direction (good breeders or the Humane Assoc.) but the fact is, there are a lot of really uneducated, uncaring people who just want to satisfy a whim.

That's a bit of a pipe dream. You know what happened last time AKC put the hammer down on high volume breeders? They left AKC and formed APR and some other registries on their own...which are very well organized, BIG numbers registries. In fact when I asked my local Petland the reg on several of the actual breed pups...it was NOT AKC...it was APR/ConKC.

To think that AKC pulling reg for dogs would stop mills is rather unlikely esp considering MOST Petstores stock the mixed/designer breed pups now over the purebred...what does AKC actually have to to with those?

They have their faults...but their job is to register purebred dogs...and not to police people's breeding programmes. The policing is internal within the breeds, breed clubs, and each breeder's morals and ethics....and external with existant laws and regulations thru state and local agencies.

Yeah, the AKC cracking down only encourages breeders to go to crap registries like ConKC and others that have sprung up in response to being booted by the more reputable registries. (There's a whole brewhaha in the BC world, but I won't go into it, suffice it to say there's a crap registry out there for crap bred BCs)

    I think a Cheek is a Chi X Peke.

I think the whole rescue/shelter thing is a really tough call.  There are some rescues/groups that go to the extremes in scrutinizing adopters, but I wonder what their return rates are or how long the dog stays in the home that's passed such scrutiny.  And if they're willing to bear the cost of keeping dogs long term in order to find "perfection" in their eyes, well, I guess that's their choice.  I also have a big chip on my shoulder where they're concerned.  I'm honestly resentful that they have the luxury of coming into our shelter and picking and choosing the easier to place dogs, have the funds to scrutinize potential adopters to the nth degree, and can trumpet their humanity as "no kill" organizations while leaving those of us sweating and stinking and struggling in less glamorous facilities and doing the dirty euthanization work (not me personally, but I know which ones are going) to deal with the cast offs.  I know they do good work, I know some people can't volunteer in a shelter, it's very tough on your heart, but I resent that there isn't more help coming to the shelters, so that's where I choose to put my efforts.

And the AKC has an inspection program where they not only insure that all required paperwork in in compliance but also that conditions the dogs are kept in are appropriate to the AKC and local laws.  If you register over a certain number of litters each year you are guaranteed an inspection, if you are under that number a random number of people are inspected.

I have never heard of that.  The only registries for BC's I know of is the USBCC, ABCA, BCSA.  I know about the issues that these folks have with each other but I haven't heard of what you are talking about.

Looks like a web page that a person created when the internet first became popular and people were first learning.  Put as much stuff on a page as you can.
