Cloudy eye

My parent's dog, Maizy, has a cloudy eye. They discovered it on Thursday. She is rubbing at it with her paw and rubbing it on her pillow. My mom is taking her to the vet this afternoon, but she called me this morning very worried because some of her co-workers are saying that she is probably blind in that eye. Now, I think that it is probably a scratch on her cornea. I think the co-workers are equating the cloudy eye with blindness. I saw this dog last Saturday...nothing was wrong with her eyes or her sight. She is not an incredibly active dog, but likes to play with her stuffies - shaking them, chasing them, etc. I am thinking, but I could be wrong, that blindness would not happen so quickly, unless she had an anerysm. I also told my mom that I think she would have seen something that would have alerted her to that.

So, can anyone weigh in here and help me give my mom an idea of what the vet will tell her this afternoon?

If it did appear really quickly, blindness may be incorrect. It could very well be that she scratched her eye if it appeared suddenly and seems to be bothering her.

However, I do know that cloudy eyes are typically associated with cataracts. I hope that isn't the case for Miss Maizy!!

Eyes tend to cloud over as dogs age. Dakota's eyes are starting to get a tad bit cloudy, for example. She's not blind, she just can't see as well as she used to.

Your vet can tell you more. If she's scratching at her eye then she probably injured it.

Blindness can happen overnight -- PRA happens like that. Sometimes it happens over the course of a few days but sometimes literally over-night.

A scratch on the cornea usually can't be 'seen' by the naked eye and the eye won't appear 'cloudy'. The vet will need to use a dye and fluorescent light to find any sort of problem on the cornea.

Typically a 'cloudy' eye could mean the onset of something like cataracts, but honestly this plain sounds odd to me and I'd have her at a vet NOW.

She went to the vet and it wasn't a scratch on the cornea. He did put dye in her eye and was able to see to the back of the eye, which he said was good. My mom asked the vet about blindness and he didn't really say either way. Maizy is on a steriod eye drop and antibiotics. Her temp was around 103, but my mom said she was very nervous, panting, agitated and excited. So, the vet said to take her temp at home. I don't know if my mom has done that yet, but she did call me this evening to tell me that after putting the drops in her eye she thinks it looks better already. She said that she doesn't think it is wishful thinking, but she will have my dad look at her when he gets home.

She will take Maizy back to the vet Monday evening, as he will be going on vacation Tuesday. Confused So, hopefully this is just an infection. If not, the vet said she will need to see an eye specialist.

I'm glad you updated -- this was the first post I checked for. I didn't think it sounded like a 'scratch'. I surely hope it clears up!

I saw Maizy yesterday and my mom said that her eye is about back to normal. She said that when it was bad, they couldn't even see the pupil...the entire eye was a cloudy blue. Yesterday you could see her brown eye color. So, I hope that she is on the mend.

The vet saw Maizy on Monday and was surprised how well she responded to the medicine. He is cautiously optimistic. :)
