A corner has been turned!

    A corner has been turned!

I have had an enormously looong day and I almost didn't go to the shelter today.  Boy, am I glad I DID go!

A little background: about a month ago, a Chinese crested (powderpuff) was turned in by his owner.  She informed us that he bites and doesn't like kids. I wasn't there, but the other volunteer and our ACO said the owner brought her 2YO grandson and he was Hell on wheels. He tooks Grandma's keys and went and turned her truck onIndifferent.  He was also KICKING at Patches (the dog's name). I wonder why he doesn't like kids? (sarcasm set to "kill";).

The first week, Patches did nothing but curl up in a fetal ball and shake whenever we went by him.  Darleen talked with him every day and we finally got a drag leash on him so we could catch him. For the first month, I only talked to him through the kennel door. He would make eye contact, but nothing else. Two weeks ago, I took him for a walk.  I didn't make him do anything but walk on my left side. We did this for a week.  Last week, I made him come to me when we stopped.  He circles and heels well, so somebody had worked with him at SOME point. When we stopped, I very carefully petted the top of his head with a finger (he would have bitten me a week earlier if I had tried this).  This week, he came to me as soon as I picked up his drag leash.  Today, we had a break through! He MET me at the front of his kennel and was ready to go.  I made him come and heel for me and I petted his back.  Then, we stopped and found a place to sit down. I patted my knee and he put his paws up on my lap! I pettted him and then stopped and he nudged me for more pets.  I couldn't believe it!

When we got back to the shelter, I handed out treats and saw him wag his tail for the VERY first time.  I wasn't even SURE he HAD a tail; I had never seen it before today because it was curled sooo tightly under his belly. He also came ot the front of the kennel to talk to me.  I was nearly in tears.

What is sooo sad is that I know  two of Patches' brothers (not littermates, but same breeding) and they are sweet, happy, outgoing little dogs. I can only hope that he will finally come out of his shell and find a loving, caring, forever home.

Oh, that just makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it? What a nice story! Thank you for posting that, it cheered me up a lot! God bless you for taking time with the little guy! I hope he finds a wonderful forever home.

I am sitting here with tears of joy running down my face -- YOU ARE AWESOME, LADY!!!!

Thank you thank you thank you for doing this for this dog.  Can you email me and let me know where-abouts you are?  I have a lot of contacts and I'd love to get something started to try and help THIS dog.

Doing something like this is so rewarding.  David and I took on a special girl like this once -- and it was THE single best placement I ever made!  (in fact, I placed Millie with a woman who had been a victim of spousal abuse -- and she declared she and Millie could "help each other heal" and IT HAPPENED!!!)

Awww, I am tearing up here at work.  They will be wondering what is wrong with me.   That is a beautiful story.  Your a very special person to take the time and be so caring.   I do hope Patches has many more breakthroughs and that you can find her a wonderful forever home ( with no braty grandkids this time).

Awwww! Poor little sweetheart. I'm so glad you've been able to help her! I can't imagine - to relax and learn to trust people in a shelter environment, she must have had a pretty terrible home life.

OMG!  Lori, isn't that the BEST feeling when they take that leap of trust?  I haven't been in rescue long but I've seen/heard of enough dogs that have been similar to poor Patches.  Once that first HUGE step has been taken, it snowballs.  GREAT work, lady!!  I pray that Patches realizes that not all human are terrors like the grandson.  What a horrible child.  Go Patches go!!  It was your lucky day when Lori stepped into your life.  May he find the perfect new home where he can be happy & healthy & LOVED!

Oh! I love when you can physcially SEE the change!

Congrats on your break through with Patches. It sounds like you made a nice new friend Big Smile

lorib, you are very nearly describing a Chinese Crested Powderpuff my mom rescued.  We knew the owner (she is an elderly friend but has some very serious and very sad mental disorders).  So we knew the dog's history.  She had purchased the dog as a puppy.  Apparently the dog was terrorized by her and I heard myself a message from the owner when she called my mom and told her to come get the dog or she'd drown her!  I was so shocked, but the lady had really gone off her rocker.

My mom got the dog and it was so terrorized it spent 2 weeks in the crate.  Wouldn't come out.  We don't even know how or if she went to the bathroom!  Eventually, the dog came around and seemed like she'd been trained before!  But we knew she hadn't.  Those dogs are great dogs and such soft, cuddly, floppy little things!

Good luck with your rescue.  And bless you!

I sometimes get frustrated by not being able to help all for the animals at the shelter.  I spend time with ALL of them (we are SMALL) , but I want it to be "all better" for them and for all the critters to find their forever homes.

I am not trying to take all the credit here; I didn't  do this by myself.  It was a group effort.  I haven't spoken with Darleen, our ACO yet, to see if Patches is better with everyone or just me. Darleen actually owns one of his brothers and it just broke her heart ot see one of Happy's relatives sooo unhappy. Another friend of mine owns Happy's littermate and she was astonished that one of Boby's brothers could be so sad and generally unhappy.

Callie, I am in Oregon, near Portland.

I went down today and Patches was waiting at the front of his kennel for me! He took more treats and wagged his tail a bunch.

I talked with Darleen today and she told me she muzzled him (for her safety) and sat him on her lap and petted him for quite awhile.  I don't think we'll need the muzzle any more!Yes
