Looks like we have an indoor/outdoor cat now, and ideas for critter control (by keedokes)

Well, Monster has been back for a couple of weeks now, but he has officially become an indoor/outdoor cat.  I wish he were exclusively indoor but he keeps sneaking out, and after a couple more all nighters on his part I've opened up a kitty door that accesses the basement that a previous owner put in--it's in a window well on the west side of the house.  He doesn't like to stay out all night, but he doesn't like to come when called, either.

Any ideas on how to keep other creatures from sneaking in at night?  If I leave the door double access I'm worried about squirrels, etc.  Also, is there an insect treatment that I can put around the door to keep the insects out that won't harm Monster?

Onward to flea and tick treatment!

We leave our patio door open 24/7, and never have an issue with other animals coming in. Now, the door goes out into our securely fenced patio and yard, and animals would have to be retarded to come into it with Cherokee patrolling, so YMMV, but... I don't think you'll have a big problem.

Bugs on the other hand are DEFINITELY a problem.. I don't have any advice there... lol

Honestly, I would not worry about it too much. I know tons of people with dog doors - that never have problems.
We have a cat door that lead onto our screened in pool area - and never have a problem besides the cats bringing in lizards and such. Have you tried allowing him on an enclosed outdoor area? That seems to satisfy my cats needs to 'explore'. They have small palm trees to climb, and a pot of grass to munch on. Lots of sun to lay in, and some dirt with crawly things to play with.

I will, however, encourage you to make sure your cat is chipped and has a cat-safety collar on, just in case he gets picked up by someone.
