I Could Just KILL my Boyfriend.

I Could Just KILL my Boyfriend.

I need to rant before I start breaking things...

Ok, so I was at work, and I wasn't coming home till 9:30 at night, so I called Brendan, my boyfriend, and asked him if he could uncrate Shippo when he got home and let him play for a while. He said "OH, sure no problem." So I went back to work.

I came home tonight and found random chewed up things on the floor and Shippo running loose all over the house unsupervised!! Brendan had let him out of his crate, and then gone and sat on the computer for the next 5 hours while Shippo ran wild and alone all over the house and chewed up dryer sheets and whatever else he found on the floor. No he has reinforced himself by chewing up crap he found, so now he's going to think it's okay to chew up anything he finds and I'm am SO mad, because I can't do anything about it because it happens when I'm at work!!!

I don't know what to do, except crate him for 9 hours while I'm at work, and not allow Brendan to let him out at all, which seems cruel to me, but I dunno what else to do. This is ridiculous.

Maybe I should sign him up to be a service dog so I can take him to work with me. I DO have a disability. It's MENTALLY INSANE from this crap I have to deal with... >O\/o<

Maybe you could train Shippo to just tear/chew up your boyfriend's things? Men acn be sooo clueless sometimes!

I'm pretty sure you're just kidding, but you know that'd be fraud, right?
    • Gold Top Dog
    Yes, I was just kidding. That's why it's a rant. >u.u<

How about telling Brendan that, when he uncrates Shippo, he needs to leash the dog and fasten the leash around his waist.
    • Gold Top Dog
He won't do it. Plus, Shippo shouldn't have to be tethered to him, because, aside from him being over a year old, if he just pays him the slightest amount of attention, Shippo won't get into anything.

I'm going to have him put the exercise pen behind his desk.

Yeah, make it really easy for him. The easier the better. That will ensure that he will actually do what you ask. And come on lorib, we're not all clueless. Now you women on the other hand...  [:D]

How about finding a boyfriend that would rather spend time with the dog instead of on the computer for 5 hours? You might tell him your looking..lol

I can't imagine anyone wanting to spend that much time on the PC when they have a dog with them.

One of my problems I had when I dated was having the girls dog become more attatched to me than the girl I was with. And it did cause problems sometimes. But hey,its not like I set out to have that happen,I have always liked the company of dogs.

Have you tried crating your B/F?

Sounds like you need to train the bf….[;)]

Would the BF be agreeable to setting a timer with a loud ring for whatever time Shippo is allowed to be out of his crate and supervising him just during that time? I'll bet the first time Shippo disconnects the computer he'll get the picture.

I can sympathise... when our youngest dog was just a pup DH would always get home first and loose her to roam the downstairs of the house while he sat on the computer.  OK so it wasn;t for 5 hrs, but why not supervise and play with the pup, crate her while she eats her meal and use the PC while she's eating?  I'd come home to find random puddles all over the living room carpet and when I got cross at him and started cleaning them up he tried to blame the dog....I made it quite clear she was the INFANT and he was the ADULT and the "intelligent species", he knew she needed to be watched and let out regularly so if he couldn't supervise her properly not to let her out in the house till I got home or I'd start using the rolled up newspaper... on him.  Did the trick, but can;t say that would work for your bf....

so if he couldn't supervise her properly not to let her out in the house till I got home or I'd start using the rolled up newspaper... on him.

    Borrowed this from another thread:
A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper... and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

You could modify this so you take the dog and the BF to the "accident" in the guise of showing him how to prevent an accident.  Give him the newspaper.  Then have him repeat the phrase above while you move his wrist so he hits himself on the head.

Could you try putting up a baby gate so Shippo is confined to a certain area?  That's what we have done with Jack.  I work evenings and DH is home evenings.  Sally can be trusted for the most part (although she has gotten counter surfing down to a fine art-she can silently remove an open, half eaten container of noodles and sauce and place it on the floor without spilling a drop), but DH would confine Jack to the kitchen/dining/master bedroom area with a baby gate and it seemed to work well.

Thanks guys lol... I feel much better after ranting, and today I set up the x-pen down here next to his desk before going to work. I told him he can let Shippo out when he's NOT at his desk, but when he sit back down at that computer to put him back in the pen. This way, he can still have interaction and exercise, but not run wild all over the house developing bad habits.

It worked out great. I came home to find no destruction of any kind lol... so we'll just have to work out this system with the x-pen until Shippo grows out of this random chewing thing he's in... >9.9<
