    Bonds

I was thinking about this this morning. For Pirate's entire life with us, we've had the same roommate. Pirate will occasionally try to beg food off of him, or get an ear rub, but that's it. Mostly Pirate avoids him. Not in a scared kind of way (our roomie is a super nice guy, and certainly wouldn't ever hurt him, or something like that) just in a kind of...separate worlds kind of way.

He LOVES my best friend, and will sometimes choose her over me for attention or snuggles or whatever. She's like his second mom. Which I understand, since we spend a lot of time with her, and her dog Gretchen is Pirate's girlfriend ;)

What is strange is that he really likes my stepdad. My stepdad is a pretty tall, muscular guy, with a lot of tattoos and facial hair. Pirate will almost *always* shy away from that type of person, but not him! When we're over my mom's he always goes right to the 'man room' (my SD's den) to look for him.

Is anyone else's dog strange about who they 'bond' with?

Well Neiko will pretty much bond with anyone but he does love my brother and brother in law quite a bit.

Dakota bonds with men more than woman.

Lily - I haven't figured her out yet. She LOVED my brother in law from the start....that was the only person she never barked at when she met him.

It is funny, ALL animals and young children LOVE my father, it is so weird, dogs and cats will go to him first, aways and hang around him, and so will children, and babies don't cry when he holds them, it's hilarious!  Probably beause of how he looks, he has glasses anad a moustache.  but i don't know!

Maddie and Zack have bonded strongly with bf

When I first got Apollo we didn't know how he was with kids...so, carefully I introduced him to my brother (9 yrs old at the time) and it was love for Apollo....he was wiggling like crazy, his tail was going a hundred miles a minute. Now when I got to my parents he searches out my brother (10 yrs old now) and sticks with him; follows him everywhere. If my brother is playing playstation, Apollo is laying next to him or on his feet, if my brother is playing outside with his friends Apollo is next to him (not any other kids).

Cheza loves everyone! She goes into full body wag whenever she sees a person. We actually are going to have to work on it, because she gets far too excited. She thinks everyone should pet her.

Salem loves most people, but it's not a full body wag type thing. He really likes children. He also really likes my brother in law. Whenever he sees him he goes into full body wag and pulls right over to him.

Oh, totally, Rascal's preferences are more or less incomprehensible to me. He likes my wicked step-mother, who hates him (trying to win him over?), loves my dad (who does ALL the wrong things that usually piss him off, like patting him on the head), doesn't really like my BF's mother (which I kind of understand, since she's kind of loud and, to him, unpredictable), loved BF at first, then hated him, now likes him again... he's a complicated little dog!

Emma definitely picks and chooses who she likes. Once she likes somebody, though, their whole  "pack" is in. I thought she had a thing for Chinese Cresteds til she met one outside of the usual group we spend time with. He drove her crazy. She couldn't stand him. She wasn't mean, at all (this dog is a puppy, still), but she did growl and correct him, and try to get away from his annoyingness. She accepts people and dogs in groups. It amuses me to no end.

And she does like people that I don't like, sometimes. Sometimes, she doesn't like people that I do like (but I can see why, usually... they're doing all the wrong things with her). She absolutely ADORES my brother. He is her boy, and she forgets that I exist when he's around. I think it's pretty cute. He loves her lots, too, and will take her out for long walks, or play frisbee in the yard with her.

Gypsy is friendly with everyone.  Tattoos?  Sure! Long beards?  No problem! Gagnsta wanna-bes?  You betcha! Little old ladies with snarling little dogs? Bring 'em on! Men in uniform (Mom drools over them too!Stick out tongue)?  She climbed INTO a patrol car on an officer's lap when he recently stopped to see her (no, MOM didn't crawl in on his lap too!Big Smile)

However, there are a few people she does NOT like and will back waaay away from them. I respect her judgment  and let her decide if the person is to be her friend.  If she decides that they are NOT OK, then that's fine with me.

Sniper can be choosey with who she likes sometimes. She is completely velcro bonded to my DH and I. My DH has some pretty rough looking friends, one who is about 6'4 and 300lbs (He's a big boy!) with a beard and always wears a hat. Sniper is very nervous around him even though he is so sweet to her, always comes in quietly and ignores her until she comes over, but she is still very shy with him. She is like this with some other people too, sometimes it takes a while for her to warm up to someone if they come into our house, and some she just never does. (She HATES my DH's ex-wife when she comes over to pick up their son. I think Snipe is just reading my thoughts on the ex!) But she looovveess my sister and my parents, as I bring her over to their houses to watch while my DH and I are out of town. She loves his parents as well. She goes bonkers over kids, loves every single one of them, baby or up to a teen, she gives many a free kiss! On the street she is pretty friendly with everyone who stops to say hello to her, some times she really likes them and wags her butt hard and tries to crawl in their lap if they are crouching down. Some just get a polite tail wag and a sniff. Some people she is still shy around, I don't know what triggers it.

Charlie is in LOVE with my mom and my sister.  When Nana walks in the room, nothing else matters (except for dinner).  When we go home Charlie jumps out of the car and will run through the house looking for her.  Same thing with my sister.

Other than those two he does the usual full body wag to anybody that will pet him.
