Unfortunately sighthounds tend to become very ghostlike when they are lost. After about a week they learn that they MUST hunt to survive, and they're very good at it. They become very suspicious of strangers and pretty much revert back to wild.
That's why it's imperative to do alot of searching and mobilization of searchers, media and putting out flyers in the first 24-48 hours of a missing sighthound. Once they learn the lay of the land, they cannot be cornered or caught unless they are injured. They can jump and run higher and faster than most dogs can and for longer periods of time. They also have been bred, for the most part, to retain their independence-so they think for themselves pretty well.
