This is sickening.......but, not surprising at all......in most cases animals do not have a good life in Asian countries......

And, I just heard that India is killing its stray dogs.  Now that we have shipped enough jobs over there, the standard of living is higher and the dogs are a nuisance in the burgeoning middle class neighborhoods...

By the way, if you think it's going to get better here, it isn't.  Immigration brings more than people - it brings cultures.  So, the more people who emigrate here from countries where dogs are not as revered, well, you get the picture.  One can only hope that that is one area where assimilation  will occur.

There must be an assumption here that people of Asian descent do not read this board or if they do, they must have absorbed other cultural values.  I am of Asian descent (my family is originally from India) so I guess I am good to my 2 cats and 2 dogs and foster dogs because because my values regarding animals are not from my culture but I have some assimilated non-asian values.

I doubt thats what she meant.

Thank you, it's not.  What I hope is that when people come to America they will adopt not only our country as their own, but our highest and best values as regards the treatment of animals.  What would be sad is if the shift in our demographics spelled doom for more displaced pets.

I think you are missing point spiritdogs.  You are assuming that only North America, culturally, has a high value for animals.  As a vegetarian, I have a high regard for animals and my value for animals comes from my parents who were brought up in India.  They gained their value for animals from their parents and so on and so on.  My value for animals has nothing to do with me being assimilated by the western world or western worl passing on their high values to me.  I got it from my parents who showed me through example how to care and love other beings besides humans.  Correct me if I am wrong, but there seems to be an assumption that all people from the asian continent, in general, do not have a high regard for animals or value them as companions/part of the family.  I can go into further details if anyone is interested in what I think but I don't want to make this a bigger issue than it is.  I am not offended by anyone's comments as I have become used this notion that Asians have no cultural value for pet companions.  People assumptions and biases about everything on both sides (Asian, non Asian, fat, skinny, ugly beuatiful, rich, poor, Canadian, American etc, etc.).

Again, I don't think that's what she meant.

Standards of animal care and respect vary from place to place. What we, as Americas, concider to be humane may be highly different, or closely similar to that of other countries. Simply put, other places do treat animals different than we do, here. Our only hope is that once they arrive here, their views on proper treatment of animals will improve.

For instance, an Iranian man was recently jailed and sentanced to 30 lashes for simply walking his dog.

Here is a link to a Korean group working hard to end animal cruelty in their country - http://www.koreananimals.org/

All counties have come a long way in terms of animal care.

Leila. I am very glad that you spoke up. I was quite surprised at what was said.

How about here in the US .......the thousands and thousands of dogs that live horrible lives in puppymills, just to be dumped when they are no longer able to produce, and what about the states that throw their stray dogs and cats into gas chambers, to kill them, and what about those that buy dogs with charge cards, from pet shops, just like they are a piece of merchandise, or the people that dump the dogs and cats, at the local farm, or over the snow banks, on some back road, or throw a box full of kittens in the road...great way to get rid of them, as no one will know what they are running over. And I won't touch upon the slaughter houses and the factory farms and the beaks cut off the laying hens.Would we want the rest of the world to judge us all by these things? I would think not. I agree. There are some horrible practices that go on in some parts of the world  but don't judge all by the practices of some and .....don't forget what needs to be cleaned up in our own back yard.

I'm editing this to add. I don't have a problem with people bringing up and discussing some of these horrible practices that go on, in some other parts of the world, and wanting to do something to change things. I just have a real problem with the rather blanket statements, that people make, about people from certain parts of the world .

Just as we have customs and practices here, they have them in other parts of the world too. Many views are not the same as ours. The statements made were not blanket statements about a persons race, but rather about the customs and normalicies of different cultures.

No one said the US was perfect in their laws concerning animals.
