Chocolate Poisoning Survived!

    Chocolate Poisoning Survived!

But it was ME, not my dogs, thank goodness!

Now I know what it feels like!!!!

I made brownies from scratch. A double batch, of course, with lots of walnuts. And the Boyfiend made a dent but there were still quite a few left. I came home from work and ate, um, a LOT.

Later I was lying in bed, my heart POUNDING away, thinking, "Oh my God am I going to have a heart attack? What's WRONG with me?" and I actually thought about going to the ER. It was a relentless, steady pounding at a high rate, but not really tachycardia. There were no palpitations.

It went on for hours. I could not sleep. I wasn't doing anything but lying down but my heart just would not calm down. It was super scary. I tried the tricks I know for tachycardia but nothing worked.

I took two iron pills and a balanced mineral supplement (since I tend to get anemic and that can cause heart pounding, too--but not like that) and just waited it out. It was hours before it stopped, and so I was awake most of the night on and off after that.

I haven't had a brownie since, even though there are still some left. I tried to tell people about it and they oh-so-knowingly said, "Oh yes, all that caffeine." But I'm here to tell you it was NOT like caffeine at ALL. This was definitely different. Now I know what the dogs feel like who get chocolate poisoning, though!

Hmm, maybe I need to do that to get over my chocolate addiction

Well jeez, Jean, next time just send them to ME! I'd be glad to help you out. Smile

Unless of course, they were... special brownies.  Surprise

No, no special brownines here...aaack, I would have been SO much sicker if that had been the case! Stick out tongueThat stuff doesn't agree with me, I think I'm allergic to it.

I think it will be a loooonnnnng time before I make another batch of brownies! Ha!

Yeikes!  That's scary schtuff, Jean.  I'm glad you're okay.

Jean you need to keep some homeopathic aconite on hand.  Seriously.  I occasionally have a problem like that (a reaction to caffeine or such) ... and the aconite helps and helps fast.  But because it's a homeopathic it's not dangerous.  If you can't get it in the frozen north, let me know and I'll send you a tube!!

How scary!  Glad your feeling better.

Would that have stopped the heart pounding business?

I will check at our one lame pill store that tries to pass as a "health food" store (has little food but does have a lot of homeopathic stuff). Thank you, I didn't know there was a remedy for that.

But I'm sure not going to push the envelope with chocolate EVER again!

Scary!! Glad everything turned out OK and that the pups didn't get into any of it.

Glad you are okay.  Not to be a downer but when was the last time you had your blood sugar checked?  You can check yourself at home by making a big batch of blondies and eating as many of them as you did the brownies (how's that for a fun scientific experiment?)  Seriously though - if you get the same results get yourself to a doctor!

It was checked last April, and will get checked at the Health Fair this April again. But I will eat some candy and then use a Diastix and see if I'm passing sugar anyway. I bought some of those just to have on hand and check periodically, since I don't have health insurance. Heck, maybe I'll ask my diabetic neighbor to use her meter on me.... thanks for reminding me. I've been okay all these years and I'm not obese and it doesn't run in my family.

yeah Jean it should help ...  occasionally I will wake up in the middle of the night with my heart pounding like it's gonna leave my chest and the homeopathic aconite always settles it fast.

Okay, just so everyone who was wondering about this knows: it really WAS chocolate poisoning. I went next door and my neighbor did a fasting glucose test on my (I wobbled over in my snow boots, pajamas and jacket) and my blood sugar was totally fine. So no diabetes here! Yay!

That's good.  It was probably the caffeine in the chocolate trying to jumpstart your ticker, which was already running...Wink
