Ear Mites?

    Ear Mites?

Zack has been shaking his head at one ear last night.  My father and I looked in his ears, and in one of them there was this brown gook (sorry for my slightly less than scientific term) my father thinks it's ear mites?

I have never encountered this before.  Both Maddie and Zack will be going to the vet tomorrow to have this looked at, but I am wondering if it is ear mites and if there is anything I can do for them until they go?

While it could be ear mites, it could also be ear dirt from an infection.

There might be some home remedies, but personally, when it comes to ears, I leave those to the vet.  I owned cockers for too many years to take any chances with ears!  Since they are going in tomorrow, my vote would be for doing nothing until the vet sees them.

I've never seen Ear Mites in just one ear before.  But I suppose its possible.  I can't see anything wrong with cleaning the gook out.  It may relieve the itching some and if its from infection, there will be more there tomorrow for the vet to see.  If its Ear Mites you should be able to see them in the brown gook if you have good eyes.  But likely not until you take it out.  But definitely don't skip the vet.

The short answer is that ear mites look like coffee grounds in the ears.  (it's dried blood)

If it's waxy, gunky, mushy, stinky -- it's not ear mites.

It does look like ground coffee!

Thanks everyone!  Because today was a holiday we couldn't get them in, but we are taking them both in tomorrow.  Luckily our dogs don't mind us poking and prodding them, we can look in their mouths and ears with no fuss, as well lol we can cut their nails and they won't get upset

Hopefully ear drops won't be a big problem!
